Program Instructor, Active Older Adults

About the Role

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The AOA (Active Older Adult) Program Instructor is responsible for leading AOA-appropriate programs and branch activities, conducting member interaction tasks to promote member satisfaction, sales, and retention, and implementing program plans while supervising activities in the program areas.

Responsibilities

• Execute AOA activities, ensuring punctuality, proper materials, equipment, and attire.
• Work with YMCA leadership to facilitate, market, and organize AOA events.
• Provide additional support for AOA programming/events requiring extra staff under the guidance of the AOA Coordinator or designated branch leadership.
• Manage AOA program rosters and program balances.
• Maintain a positive rapport with participants and keep the program area clean, recognizing and eliminating potential hazards.
• Plan and implement AOA program activities that are culturally relevant and consistent with YMCA values.
• Adhere to program standards, including safety, disinfecting, and cleanliness.
• Attend staff meetings and trainings as requested.
• Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.
• Maintain positive relations with patrons and staff, modeling relationship-building skills.
• Inform supervisors or co-workers of any dilemmas, concerns, or updates during working hours.
• Learn participants’ names, engage them in conversation, and promote member interactions.
• Ensure the program area is safely closed down with all equipment and materials properly cleaned and stored.
• Responsible for advance setup and breakdown for AOA programming.
• Encourage member involvement in YMCA programs, events, and the Annual Campaign.
• Be visibly involved with members, volunteers, and staff in a manner that communicates and demonstrates the YMCA’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required; Associate degree preferred.
• Minimum of one year’s experience in programming/program growth, with Active Older Adult (AOA) programming experience preferred.
• CPR and First Aid certification and safety training required within 30 days of hire.
• Adhere to Bloodborne Pathogen standards and attend annual training.
• Experience with computers and cell phones.
• Ability to model key attributes: Welcoming, Genuine, Hopeful, Nurturing, and Determined.
• Program expertise to instruct/lead classes or teams when assigned instruction is unavailable.
• Demonstrated strong customer service skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Self-motivated team player.
• Demonstrate commitment to the mission and cause of the YMCA, upholding its values and ethics.
• Ability to work effectively with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions, and perceptions.
• Willingness and ability to act as a mandated reporter for any signs or suspicion of child abuse and neglect.

Physical Demands

• Regular use of a computer for extended periods and ability to communicate using a computer and phone/smart device.
• Frequent sitting, reaching, and moving around the work environment.
• Occasional lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Ability to perceive sounds at normal speaking levels and make discriminations in sound.
• Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of spoken word, conveying detailed or important instructions accurately.

Work Environment

• Ability to work in a moderate to noisy environment.
• Ability to multitask in a changing environment.
• Ability to travel as required.
• May be required to work outside and occasionally encounter inclement weather.
