Professor of Practice

Tulane University School of Law seeks a full-time, 12-month Professor of the Practice of Law to teach in the Academic Success program. This position is on the Law School’s Professor of the Practice (POP) track, with an initial contract of three to five years, renewable pursuant to University and Law School standards.

About the role

The Academic Success program supports student achievement during law school and bar exam preparation. The POP will teach a minimum of two courses annually focused on preparing students in their final year for common law bar exams, including instruction on legal analysis, essay writing, multiple-choice strategies, and jurisdiction-specific content. Approximately one-third of Tulane’s students take the Louisiana bar exam, while two-thirds take the bar exam in common law jurisdictions.

In addition to classroom teaching, the POP will conduct year-round academic support programming, including individualized academic coaching, and collaborate with faculty and administrative leaders to develop programming that supports students from diverse backgrounds.

Responsibilities

• Teach two Legal Analysis courses annually (based on material for common law jurisdictions).
• Aid in the development of academic success and bar programming for students and graduates, including presentations, workshops, orientation classes, and programming for first- and second-year students.
• Provide individualized academic coaching, advising, and support for students and graduates preparing for the bar exam.
• Offer individual and group instruction on academic success strategies and bar exam preparation, including study skills, exam skills, and time management.
• Engage in outreach to support students at risk of failing the bar exam and provide targeted assistance to repeat takers.
• Develop programming and communications to educate students about bar requirements, application processes, and law school course selection.
• Analyze and report on the effectiveness of academic success and bar support programs.
• Assist the Office of Academic Services and Office of Career Development in obtaining student and alumni data relating to bar admission.

Requirements

• J.D. degree from an accredited law school.
• Membership in good standing in a state bar.
• A minimum of one year of relevant experience in legal practice, equivalent legal activity, or academic teaching.
• An excellent academic record.
• Evidence of outstanding promise as a teacher.

Qualifications

Preferred:

• 3-5 years of relevant experience.
• Experience with bar exam preparation and curricular programming.
• Experience working with student populations across a range of academic and professional goals.
• Excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication, writing, and editing skills.
