Professor of Archaeology - Open Rank

About the Role

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Louisville invites applications for a tenure-track open rank position (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor) in Archaeology to serve as Director of the Center for Archaeology and Cultural Heritage. The appointment will begin August 1, 2027.

The Center for Archaeology and Cultural Heritage houses the archaeological collections and laboratories for archaeological analyses. The new Director will have a strong record of fostering community engagement through archaeology and a desire to develop future archaeologists.

Responsibilities

• Administrative leadership of the Center for Archaeology and Cultural Heritage (50% of workload), including collections, laboratory, and database management.
• Native American tribal consultation, organizing exhibitions, public outreach, education, and internship programs.
• Building partnerships with community organizations.
• Securing grants and contracts.
• Advancing transdisciplinary projects and research.
• Teaching courses in archaeology (50% of workload).
• Mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
• Participating in departmental activities.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Anthropology or related field, completed by the time of appointment.
• Strong research agenda that complements department strengths.
• Administrative experience in archaeological collections, laboratory, and database management.
• Experience with Native American tribal consultation, public outreach, and education programs.
• Successful record of grants and contracts.
• Commitment to transdisciplinary projects and community-engaged research.
