Professional Tutor (Part-time)

About the Role

The Professional Tutor will help students understand different subjects by assessing, assisting, and encouraging them in the learning processes. This position reviews class materials, explains topics, and addresses student questions to supplement classroom teaching. The role reports to the Associate Vice President of Student Services.

Responsibilities

• Tutor students enrolled in college-prep (developmental) courses to remove deficiencies and prepare them for success in college-level, credit-bearing courses.
• Conduct one-on-one and small group tutorial sessions for a variety of courses, with emphasis on study strategies and mathematics through College Algebra.
• Provide students preparing for placement tests (such as TSI) and other program entrance exams (TEAS, HESI, etc.) with study resources and direction.
• Consult with individual students to identify their academic needs and offer tutoring or other resources to address those needs.
• Work with faculty to assist students in completing assignments and meeting course objectives.
• Maintain records of tutorials as requested by the Learning Center Director and/or instructors.

Requirements

• Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
• Demonstrated proficiency in specific tutoring subject areas (A or B grades in relevant courses).
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Strong decision-making skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous tutoring experience.
• Customer service experience.
• Computer proficiency.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to:

• Remain in a stationary position for most of the time.
• Occasionally move about inside an office to access documents or office equipment.
• Constantly operate a computer or other office equipment, such as a printer or copy machine.
