Professional Tutor for Open Door Program- Science

About the role

The Open-Door Program is a federally funded Student Support Services/TRiO program that provides academic support to disadvantaged college students. The Professional Tutor supports these students in scientific subjects, utilizing information technology applications, and integrating study and learning strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Tutor students in specified scientific disciplines and encourage a systemic approach to studying.
  • Participate in professional development offerings.
  • Meet with Academic Skills Advisors and instructors to plan academic support for students.
  • Refer students to appropriate campus resources as needed.
  • Keep and maintain regular and accurate records of tutoring sessions using appropriate forms.
  • Reach out to students in the program and encourage them to seek academic support.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the position of Professional Tutor.

Requirements

  • Completed at least 60 credits of higher education with a “B” average or better in the content area or related subject area.
  • The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • The ability to work with a diverse student population.
  • The ability to adjust tutoring methods as needed to meet various learning styles.
  • The ability to work well with staff, students, and faculty at the professional level.
  • The ability to integrate effective study and learning strategies to maximize the student’s potential for academic progress.
  • Strong skills in research methods and general laboratory knowledge.

Qualifications

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include evening and weekend hours, approximately 10-18 hours a week preferred.
  • Preferred proficiency in a combination of Biology and Anatomy & Physiology.
  • Knowledge of Chemistry or Physics is also considered.

Pay

$15.18 per hour, part time

Schedule

10 to 18 hours per week to be scheduled Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Hours vary due to student and class scheduling throughout the year. Some weekend and evening hours may be required.
