About the role

The School of Journalism and Media at the University of Texas at Austin invites applications for a full-time, professional-track faculty member at the rank of assistant professor in the areas of AI, journalism and media to begin in Fall 2027. The position is a three-year appointment. The School is part of the top-ranked Moody College of Communication, which includes programs in Advertising & Public Relations, Communication and Leadership, Communication Studies, Radio-Television-Film, and Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences. The School offers B.J., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees and is housed in the G.B. Dealey Center for New Media. We seek an accomplished media professional whose work centers on the integration of artificial intelligence into journalism and media.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate courses in AI, journalism and media; depending on curricular needs, may also teach courses serving students across Moody College's majors.
  • Depending on expertise, may teach topics including the ethics of AI use, reporting and writing with AI, the impact of AI on journalism and media, and other uses of AI in newsrooms and media-focused workplaces.
  • Mentor students.
  • Contribute to curriculum development.
  • Help strengthen relationships with industry partners.
  • Support the school’s and college’s efforts to assess how students are learning to apply AI tools, identify gaps in preparedness, and inform curricular strategy over time.
  • Depending on qualifications, may participate in the school’s Media Innovation Group, funded by the Dallas Morning News Initiative.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field.
  • At least five years of professional media experience at the time of appointment.
  • Experience teaching at the college level is preferred.
