New Visions for Public Schools’ Curriculum & Instruction (C&I) Department works to ensure outstanding instruction in every classroom. Sustainable implementation of high-quality curriculum is the primary driver of this goal and supports the growth of teachers, administrators, counselors, and librarians at all career stages. The C&I team grounds its work in shared elements: understanding how students learn, applying adult learning principles, embedding opportunities to modify curriculum for specific contexts or student needs, and organizing around continuous improvement.

About the role

The Professional Learning Specialist partners with New Visions staff, teacher leaders, and external experts to refine and support the implementation of New Visions Biology, Earth & Space Science, and OpenSciEd Chemistry and Physics curricula. Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing and delivering professional learning opportunities—such as side-by-side coaching, workshops, and data dives—that help teachers effectively use New Visions Science and OpenSciEd materials
  • Coaching teachers and instructional leaders to build school-based capacity
  • Supporting district leaders in the successful roll-out of New Visions Science and OpenSciEd curricula
  • Monitoring shifts in the field (including NY State Standards, Regents, and national standards) and creating supplemental materials to inform instructional leaders and teachers

This role requires deep collaboration with the Curriculum team and school-facing staff, as well as ongoing engagement with stakeholders at multiple levels of the system.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with New Visions staff and teacher advisors to understand how the New Visions and OpenSciEd science curricula:
    • Support student mastery through routines
    • Embed scaffolds and differentiation to support all learners
    • Promote student success on the Regents exam (when applicable) and in future classes
    • Foster the development of multiple literacies for college and career readiness
  • Develop and implement teacher professional learning—including coaching, workshops, and other formats—across NYC, NY State, and beyond, grounded in curricular resources and shared instructional routines and strategies
  • Study and facilitate curriculum implementation in school sites
  • Develop and implement coaching plans that support teachers and instructional leaders in building school-based capacity for High Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM) in science

Requirements

  • Master’s-level degree
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in public education, preferably in urban schools and at the secondary science level
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience supervising, coaching, or leading teachers, ideally in at least 2 different school sites

Skills

  • Understanding of principles of both student learning and adult learning
  • Ability to support teachers in implementing HQIM in science for students with diverse learning needs
  • Experience leading a team and collaborating with others, using data to drive organizational change
  • Commitment to data-driven decision-making, systems thinking, and continuous learning as drivers of improved student outcomes
  • Skills in designing, implementing, and assessing effective secondary science curricula
  • Strong service and support orientation toward schools and school communities
  • Strong interpersonal skills to navigate diverse cultural environments in public high schools and work effectively with a wide range of school and district leaders
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Familiarity with the NGSS or NYSSLS, and HQIM for secondary science, preferably New Visions and OpenSciEd science curricula

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to travel onsite to NYC public schools across the 5 boroughs, multiple days per week, typically in 6-hour daily increments
  • Ability to walk up stairs
  • Ability to converse with internal staff and external stakeholders
  • Ability to operate a computer and other relevant technology, such as phones, screens, printers, and tablets
  • Ability to carry up to 10 pounds (e.g., a laptop and carrying case)

The ideal candidate must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Schedule

This is a part-time, hourly position requiring 2–3 days (15–20 hours) per week, conducted in person across New Visions offices and school sites throughout the NYC area.

Pay

Pay range: $36/hour minimum to $54/hour maximum. While the majority of new hires’ starting salaries are placed in the first half of the range to allow for growth, those with significant relevant experience may be placed at the higher end.
