About the role

This is a temporary or on-call position providing professional support for the Gifted and Talented Education Pre-College program, ASCEND (Accelerated Study in Composition, English, and Narrative Discourse) and CHAMP (Cooperative Highly Accelerated Mathematics Program). These programs serve academically gifted middle school students seeking high school credit in English (ASCEND) and Mathematics (CHAMP). The position will be performed online and on MSU’s campus in East Lansing, MI.

Responsibilities

  • Lead or assist in virtual study labs on Saturdays
  • Lead or assist in Tuesday evening sessions for the second CHAMP lab
  • Tutor middle or high school students in high school English or Math curriculum

Qualifications

  • Strong work ethic and ability to complete tasks in a timely manner
  • Ability to interpret instructions provided in written or oral form
  • Capacity to multi-task efficiently in a fast-paced, changing environment
  • Superior customer service skills with creativity and problem-solving ability
  • Strong communication, writing, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to interact effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and experience levels
  • Availability every Saturday morning to lead or assist in virtual study labs

Education and Certifications

  • MSU student applicants must be freshmen, sophomores, or juniors studying in WRAC, English, RCAH, or the College of Education for ASCEND
  • MSU student applicants must be freshmen, sophomores, or juniors studying in Mathematics or the College of Education for CHAMP
  • All other applicants must be enrolled college students in a comparable subject or professionals with relevant experience
  • Must enjoy reading and writing (for ASCEND) or doing math (for CHAMP)
  • Must enjoy working with middle and high school students

Appointment Timeframe

The position runs from August through May; June and July are non-working months. This position may be recurring but does not lead to full-time employment.

Compensation

Compensation begins at $15.00 per hour and is determined by the applicant’s relevant experience and job performance. Overtime and benefits are not available.
