About the role

Weights and Measures inspectors protect both buyers’ and sellers’ interests by ensuring equity in the marketplace. As part of a team of 34 inspectors, you will perform inspections across Illinois, investigate consumer complaints about shortages or unfair practices, and educate buyers and sellers on their rights under the Weights and Measures Act and Motor Fuel & Petroleum Standards Act. The Products and Standards team inspects 145,000 devices annually.

Responsibilities

• Participate in a six- to twelve-month agency-approved training program covering inspection and investigation of products sold by weight, measure, or count.
• Receive training in inspection techniques, testing commercially used weighing and measuring devices, inspecting prepackaged commodities, and inspecting scanning devices.
• Perform controlled assignments under close supervision, including Stage II Vapor Recovery inspections, motor-fuel sample collection, and calibration of regulatory and industry standards in the Metrology Laboratory.
• Serve as an apprentice in the field under experienced inspectors.
• Travel for on-the-job training, meetings, and workshops to learn proper inspection procedures and administrative policies.
• Maintain records of daily activities.
• Operate and maintain vehicle, testing, and office equipment.
• Perform other duties as required within the scope of the role.

Requirements

• Knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of two years of college, preferably with coursework in business, management, or communications.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel with periodic overnight stays (lodging and personal expenses reimbursed).
• Ability to work evenings, weekends, and overtime as required.
• Physical ability to perform heavy work: lifting up to 100 pounds occasionally and up to 50 pounds frequently.
• Ability to sustain long periods of city and highway driving.
• Ability to climb, work in environments with dust, chemicals, motor fuel, refrigerated areas, and outdoors in all seasons.
• Residency in McHenry County; home location will serve as the base of daily operations.
• Successful completion of a name-based background screening and preemployment physical.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience testing commercially used devices.
• Working knowledge of mathematics (multiplication, division, addition, subtraction).
• Experience enforcing regulations based on established procedures or guidelines.
• Experience accurately filling out forms and reports.
• Experience following instructions and established policy.
• Experience communicating with associates, businesses, and the general public.
• Experience testifying in court or administrative hearings regarding inspections or investigations.

Pay

Anticipated starting salary: $4,747 – $6,446 per month.
