About the Role

Weights and Measures inspectors protect both buyers' and sellers' interests by ensuring equity in the marketplace. As part of a team of 34 inspectors, you will perform inspections statewide, investigate consumer complaints about shortages or unfair practices, and educate buyers and sellers about their rights under the Weights and Measures Act and Motor Fuel & Petroleum Standards Act. The Products and Standards team inspects 145,000 devices annually. This position offers an excellent beginning salary and benefits.

Responsibilities

• Participate in a 6- to 12-month agency-approved training program under direct supervision, focusing on inspection and investigation of products sold by weight, measure, or count.
• Receive training in inspection techniques, testing commercially used weighing and measuring devices, inspecting prepackaged commodities, and inspecting scanning devices.
• Perform controlled assignments under close supervision, including Stage II Vapor Recovery inspections, collection of motor fuel samples for quality analysis, and calibration of regulatory and industry standards in the Metrology Laboratory.
• Serve as an apprentice in the field under the guidance of experienced Products and Standards Inspectors.
• Travel for on-the-job training and orientation, including maintaining records of daily activities and attending meetings/workshops to learn proper inspection procedures and administrative policies.
• Operate and maintain vehicles, testing equipment, and office equipment.
• Perform other duties as required or assigned within the scope of the role.

Requirements

• Knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of two years of college, preferably with coursework in business, management, or communications.
• Ability to successfully pass a preemployment physical and name-based background screening.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel with periodic overnight stays (employee covers lodging/personal expenses until reimbursed).
• Ability to work overtime, including evenings and weekends, as required.
• Capability to perform heavy work, including lifting up to 100 pounds occasionally and up to 50 pounds frequently.
• Ability to sustain long periods of city and highway driving, climb, and work in environments with dust, chemicals, motor fuel, refrigerated areas, and outdoor conditions across all seasons.
• Residency in Lake County required; must work from home as the base of daily operations to service designated worksites.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience testing commercially used devices.
• Working knowledge of mathematics (multiplication, division, addition, subtraction).
• Experience enforcing regulations based on established procedures/guidelines.
• Experience accurately filling out forms and reports.
• Experience following instructions and established policy.
• Experience communicating with associates, businesses, and the general public.
• Experience testifying in court or administrative hearings regarding inspections or investigations.

Pay

Anticipated starting salary: $4,747 – $6,446 monthly.

7:00 AM – 5:30 PM, Monday–Thursday.
