Melting Department

The Brackenridge Melt shop has a multi-step manufacturing process to cast metal into slabs or ingots that are used in a variety of industries. Our facility has two 110 ton Electric Arc Furnaces and a 120 ton Argon Oxygen Decarburization (AOD) vessel. The raw materials used in the melting process are coarse stainless steel scrap, turnings and slag formers. After initial melting the metal is transferred to the AOD vessel where it is subjected to three steps of refining: decarburization, reduction, and desulphurization.
