About the role

The Property and Casualty Underwriter manages a portfolio of accounts, drives new and renewal business opportunities, assesses risks, evaluates applications, and determines coverage terms and premiums to ensure sound underwriting decisions. This role develops and maintains underwriting practices, builds relationships with brokers, and partners with stakeholders to create customized insurance solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite new and renewal property and casualty business, analyzing policy forms, broker endorsement requests, and submitted documentation per company underwriting standards.
  • Determine whether to accept, modify, or decline a risk by evaluating coverage value, location, usage, safety features, and other relevant factors.
  • Set appropriate coverage limits, insurance premiums, policy terms, and conditions based on risk assessment and underwriting guidelines.
  • Actively manage a portfolio of property and casualty accounts.
  • Deliver professional and technically sound services for new business and renewals while adhering to underwriting guidelines.
  • Examine, identify, and evaluate exposures to ensure compliance with state, country, and carrier guidelines.
  • Provide premium forecasts and business plans to support budget and performance targets.
  • Maintain broker relationships and collaborate across teams to manage production activities (submissions, quotes, declines, binds, issuance).
  • Build long-term professional relationships within the designated portfolio and create customized insurance solutions for clients.
  • Create new business opportunities, maximize portfolio retention, and ensure timely renewal reviews to meet business targets.
  • Execute marketing activities, attend seminars and training, and stay updated on market dynamics and underwriting trends.
  • Stay informed about industry trends, emerging risks, regulations, and adjust underwriting strategies accordingly.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Risk Management, Actuarial Science, Business Administration, or a related discipline (or commensurate work experience).
  • 5+ years of experience in Property and Casualty Underwriting.
  • Must meet minimum requirements for state P&C and/or surplus line licenses.
  • Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) certification is a plus.

Pay

The target salary range for this position is $96,000.00 - $120,000.00 annually. The range considers factors such as training, transferable skills, work experience, licensure, certification, business needs, and market demands. Full-time roles are eligible for bonuses and benefits.
