About the Role
Covia is seeking a dynamic Production Supervisor to oversee and direct hourly employee work performance at its Oregon, IL location. This role ensures daily production and shipping requirements are met while adhering to quality control, safety, and health policies. The Production Supervisor reports directly to the Plant Superintendent and operates with limited supervision.
Responsibilities
- Ensure safety is the top priority by following Corporate Safety and Health policies, Plant procedures, and MSHA regulations, including:
- Daily inspection of plant site and quarry areas for dangerous conditions.
- Monitoring hourly employees for proper PPE, job knowledge, and adherence to the SLAM Risks process.
- Continuous monitoring of the job site for unsafe conditions and taking corrective action.
- Ensuring employees have proper equipment, tools, and training.
- Conducting daily pre-shift “Safety Focus” and weekly “Toolbox Talk” safety meetings.
- Supervise all production process activities, including quarrying, dewatering, drying, screening, and loading.
- Develop and implement production schedules, ensuring job assignments are prepared before shifts.
- Ensure production equipment is operational and properly maintained; report repairs via the work order system.
- Troubleshoot operating problems, correct immediate issues, and document those requiring maintenance.
- Maintain production rates, inventory levels, and timely shipments.
- Monitor production parameters (e.g., equipment amperage, sand temperature, burner settings) for optimal efficiency.
- Complete accurate and timely reports, including departmental operating hours, operator tasks, overtime, and work orders.
- Improve work environment and product quality through safer operating practices and procedures.
- Oversee operator training, audits, and documentation per MSHA, Covia, and Plant requirements.
- Maintain plant cleanliness to enhance safety, efficiency, and employee morale.
- Solicit and implement production improvement ideas from hourly employees.
- Maintain open communication with subordinates and superiors to foster professional relationships.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations on waste disposal, air/water pollutants, and reclamation laws.
- Complete assigned projects in a timely manner.
- Adhere to Covia’s Purchasing Policies and Procedures for procuring parts, goods, or services.
- Participate in Plant Steering Team and/or Staff meetings as required.
- Administer disciplinary action for direct reports violating safety rules or operating procedures.
- Drive continuous improvement across all plant operations.
- Work overtime as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree preferred; high school diploma or equivalent required.
- 2-5 years of related operations supervisory experience.
- Experience in lean manufacturing and 5S is a plus.
- Familiarity with computer systems, especially Microsoft Office Programs.
