About the role

This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities.

The Shift Lead will provide day-to-day leadership and coordination of NDT operations across A shift, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality execution of inspection activities while supporting production priorities. This role will serve as a key connection between NDT personnel and the AFP/NDT Production Manager, providing floor-level leadership, coordinating resources, resolving operational issues, and ensuring effective communication and continuity between shifts. A critical responsibility of this position is to provide a complete and accurate handoff of work, priorities, outstanding issues, and production status to the C Shift or Weekend Shift Lead to ensure seamless continuation of NDT operations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee NDT operations across A shift.
  • Coordinate daily staffing, workload, priorities, and assignments to meet production requirements.
  • Provide direction, coaching, and support to NDT personnel.
  • Monitor workflow and adjust priorities to support production needs.
  • Ensure NDT inspections are performed in accordance with approved procedures, quality standards, and applicable requirements.
  • Promote a strong culture of safety, quality, accountability, and teamwork.
  • Provide technical and operational support in resolving inspection and production issues.
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of inspection records and required documentation.
  • Maintain clear communication with the AFP/NDT Production Manager regarding production status, risks, staffing, and operational issues.
  • Conduct thorough shift handoffs to the C Shift or Weekend Shift Lead, including work completed, remaining work, production priorities, open issues, equipment status, and follow-up actions.
  • Ensure all critical information is transferred before the end of the shift to maintain continuity of operations.
  • Partner with the C Shift/Weekend Shift Lead to ensure seamless transition of ongoing work and priorities.
  • Coordinate with Production, Quality, Engineering, Maintenance, and other organizations to resolve issues and maintain production flow.
  • Escalate safety, quality, equipment, staffing, and production concerns to the AFP/NDT Production Manager as appropriate.
  • Support training, qualification, and development of NDT personnel.
  • Monitor NDT equipment readiness, calibration, and availability.
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve safety, quality, productivity, and operational efficiency.
  • Support continuous improvement activities, audits, investigations, and corrective actions.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience working in NDT operations within a production or manufacturing environment.
  • Current NDT Certifications/qualifications applicable to the required inspection methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership and direction to NDT personnel.
  • Strong understanding of NDT processes, procedures, specifications, and quality requirements.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, work instructions, and inspection criteria.
  • Strong understanding of safety requirements and quality standards within a production environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work and make sound decisions in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate production status, technical issues, and priorities across shifts.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct clear and thorough shift-to-shift handoffs.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with Production, Quality, Engineering, Maintenance, and other cross-functional organizations.
  • Ability to lead by example and maintain high standards of safety, quality, accountability, and professionalism.

Desired Skills

  • Previous experience as an NDT Lead, Senior NDT Technician, Supervisor, or equivalent technical leadership role.
  • Experience leading or coordinating personnel across multiple shifts.
  • Experience in aerospace, advanced manufacturing, spaceflight, or other highly regulated production environments.
  • Experience with multiple NDT methods and inspection technologies.
  • Experience interpreting engineering drawings, GD&T, specifications, and customer requirements.
  • Experience with NDT procedure development, qualification, or implementation.
  • Experience supporting root-cause investigations, nonconformance resolution, and corrective actions.
  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, Kaizen, or other continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Experience using manufacturing execution systems (MES), ERP systems, or digital inspection/documentation systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop technicians and help build technical capability within a team.
  • Experience coordinating production priorities and resources across multiple functional organizations.
  • Experience identifying opportunities to improve safety, quality, throughput, and operational efficiency.

Leadership Expectations

The Shift Lead is expected to establish consistent expectations across A and B shifts and ensure production priorities established by the AFP/NDT Production Manager are effectively executed. The Shift Lead will also be accountable for ensuring that C Shift and Weekend Shift Leads receive a complete and actionable handoff, minimizing disruptions and preventing loss of information between shifts. The successful candidate will lead by example and promote the highest standards of safety, quality, technical excellence, productivity, communication, and accountability.

Why This Role Matters

This position provides dedicated leadership for A and B shift NDT operations while creating strong operational continuity across the full production schedule. Effective coordination with the C Shift/Weekend Shift Lead will ensure work remains aligned, priorities are maintained, and critical issues are communicated across all shifts.

Export Control Regulations

  • Blue’s Standard Background Check (required for all positions).
  • Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) background check if at any time the role requires one to be on a military installation (required for certain job profiles).
  • Drivers who operate Commercial Motor Vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or combination of power unit and trailer that meets or exceeds 10,001 lbs. and/or transports placardable amounts of hazardous materials by ground in any vehicle on a public road while in commerce, may be subject to additional Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations including: Driver Qualification Files, Medical Certification (obtained before onboarding), Road Test, Hours of Service, Drug and Alcohol Testing, vehicle inspection requirements, CDL requirements (if applicable) and hazardous materials transportation/shipping training (required for certain job profiles).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Merchant Mariner Credential, which includes pre-employment and random drug testing as well as DOT physical (required for certain job profiles).
