About the role
The Production Department Supervisor oversees the overall operation of their department, ensuring alignment with cost, profit, and production goals. This role focuses on training and developing employees, relying on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals with some creativity and latitude. The supervisor works under a manager’s guidance, develops methods, and assists in implementing plans to achieve departmental objectives.
Responsibilities
- Manages the production operation of multiple departments across multiple shifts.
- Leads and motivates a group of employees to maximize productivity.
- Identifies, researches, and resolves various problems and opportunities.
- Evaluates performance of individuals and programs.
- Coaches and counsels employees.
- Ensures activities align with UFP policies, procedures, and applicable law.
- Communicates with employees and other management members as required.
- Manages cost and profitability of the department.
- Oversees department inventory.
- Leads continuous improvement and safety initiatives.
- Prepares reports and maintains records.
- Participates in the Safety Committee and ensures compliance with safety standards.
- If assigned to the Treating Department, performs duties consistent with hazardous material handling procedures.
- May drive a forklift to assist in moving materials to and from production areas.
- Performs other duties as required.
Requirements
- Post-high school education is required.
- Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience in manufacturing.
- 1 to 3 years of experience managing people.
- Demonstrated ability to set up and manage agendas, ensuring clear time frames and effective use of visual aids.
- Strong communication skills, including clear and precise speaking, engaging listeners, and asking pertinent questions.
- Proficiency in operating Inside UFPI, with a thorough understanding of UFP policy training and main page navigation.
- Skilled in searching topics, using Citrix, and maintaining email etiquette, with a strong grasp of timelines and deadlines.
- Expertise in the Precise Plant Quality Program, including quality requirements communication, training, and troubleshooting.
- Attention to detail in identifying production details, reporting, and implementing double-check systems.
- Ability to maintain a routine for day-to-day work while staying organized during flexible periods.
- Effective daily communication with employees, holding them accountable, and conveying production expectations.
- Commitment to safety, adhering to UFP’s principle that safety is the top priority, and working with safety leaders on JDA’s and JSA’s.
- Proper training in conducting machine audits, understanding LOTO, and implementing safety improvements.
- Knowledge of continuous improvement (CI) principles, including 5S and TPM, and communicating their importance.
- Technical knowledge of machinery and equipment, including proper training, understanding machine purposes, and documenting training.
- Strong understanding of preventative maintenance and standard work instructions.
- Ability to provide daily feedback, identify potential advancement based on performance, and conduct employee reviews.
- Understanding the importance of training employees, emphasizing safety and safeguards.
- Self-awareness to reflect on situations and identify areas for improvement.
- Successfully complete the Forklift Driver licensing process.
Pay
Hourly/Salary Pay Range: $71,000 annually, dependent on experience.

Bonus/Incentive Pay
- Incentive pay may be available for certain roles, including piece rate incentives, weekly production bonuses, trip rates, and employee referral bonuses.
- A discretionary annual bonus based on Company and business unit performance may also be provided.
