About the role

The Corporate Bookmaking team seeks a Production Editor to support the Random House Publishing Group by overseeing a variety of titles from manuscript to bound book. This role will handle graphic novels, comics, and a range of titles across Random House, including originals, translations, and scroll-to-print projects (some 4-color).

Responsibilities

  • Handle production editorial work for original titles (both 1-color and 4-color) from manuscript to bound book/ePub, as well as hardcover compilations.
  • Hire freelance copy editors, proofreaders, and indexers for original titles; review their work through all passes, including clearing manuscripts post-copyediting and collating changes from authors and freelancers in page proofs.
  • Perform quality checks on ebook files.
  • Copyedit jacket/cover copy and second-format additional material, such as sales quotes and reading group guides; proofread jackets/covers, captions, and additional material.
  • Electronically code/tag manuscripts for design and composition.
  • Collaborate with production, design, and managing editorial departments to maintain book schedules.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience as a trade-book production editor or freelancer with comics experience.
  • Excellent copyediting, proofreading, and organizational skills.
  • Detailed familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style and general facility with modern copyediting style.
  • Ability to manage a diverse set of responsibilities efficiently and effectively.
  • Ability to set and meet deadlines.
  • Comfortable asking for help when needed and capable of rising to challenges.

Skills

  • Expertise with electronic copyediting using Microsoft Word.
  • Experience with Adobe Acrobat PDF markup tools.
  • Experience working on graphic novels, comic books, or other 4-color books.

Pay

Salary for this position is $70,500 per year. All positions are eligible for an annual profit award or bonus, subject to company results.
