As a Product Performance & Claims Substantiation Manager, you will lead BASF Personal Care’s product performance, clinical, consumer, and claims-substantiation capabilities, overseeing testing-center operations, employee leadership, claims methodology development, and communication of results to internal and customer-facing stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Lead the day-to-day execution of the clinical and consumer research center testing schedule, focusing on research quality, capacity, and continuous improvement. Oversee end-to-end study operations, including protocol design, panel recruitment, study execution, data analysis, reporting, and documentation.
- Build and maintain a reliable pool of clinical panelists in the Tarrytown and Rockland County, NY areas, including oversight of panelist payment processes. Manage interfaces with external CROs and design external clinical or consumer studies as needed.
- Identify new clinical, consumer, physical, and sensory product claims for personal care ingredients, finished prototypes, and bioactives pipeline projects. Develop and improve test methodologies, clinical protocols, and product-performance approaches to support claims substantiation.
- Lead the product performance testing group across clinical, consumer, and sensory evaluations, method development, standard operating procedures, and quality improvements. Assess current and emerging industry instrumentation and recommend additions or upgrades to strengthen research-center capabilities.
- Manage employees on the Product Performance & Claims Substantiation/testing-center team, including direct-report leadership, prioritization of research activities, and the testing-center budget. Contribute to planning for capital equipment needs.
- Partner and collaborate with regional sales, marketing, technical, and customer-facing teams to define clear research objectives that translate product-performance data into meaningful claims support. Contribute to global bioactives and new-product-development projects with product-performance teams in Europe and Asia. Communicate study results and technical conclusions to internal stakeholders, customers, and external scientific audiences.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences or a related field; a Master’s degree is preferred.
- 8+ years of R&D experience in personal care, health care, nutrition, or a related industry.
- 5+ years of experience leading a clinical and consumer research program and conducting clinical and consumer testing, including managing a team of direct reports.
- Experience managing a sizable department budget and capital equipment budget is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of clinical and consumer protocol design, statistics, industry-standard procedures, laboratory practices, and interpretation of test results.
- Demonstrated experience developing innovative product-performance or claims-support protocols for personal care applications.
- Effectiveness collaborating across functions, regions, and global business partners in the cosmetics or personal care industry.

Pay
The competitive pay range for this role is $122,400 – $153,000. Actual pay will be determined based on education, certifications, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
