Product Metallurgist
Basics
The Product Metallurgist I and II are responsible for assisting in determining and eliminating the root cause of process and product non-conformances, determining process route, practice design and supporting operations, sales, and customer with metallurgical guidance for improvement and resolution.
Nature & Scope
This job is accountable for identifying and solving metallurgical problems. The incumbent will assist in determining and eliminating the root cause of non-conformance that are found at the division and/or with the customer.

Qualifications
- Four-year college degree, preferably in metallurgical engineering or steelmaking knowledge proven through metallurgical experience
- A desire to obtain a technical degree
- Product Metallurgist I: G-Future and/or 1-3 years’ experience
- Product Metallurgist II: 5+ years’ experience
- Knowledge of grade specifications, customer, and industry specifications
- Basic computer literacy
- Completed Product Metallurgist training qualification checklist
Principal Accountabilities
- Responsible for identifying and solving metallurgical problems.
- Perform as customer technical liaison.
- Dispositions product placed on hold for quality issues or concerns.
- Obtain all metallurgical, customer and industry specifications.
- Document customer requirements and process routing of quotes in the plant-wide operating systems.
- Cook up and control flow of sales quotes in a timely manner.
- Oversee trial orders with production departments.
- Initiate Customer Claims when applicable.
- Determine process routing for standard products.
- Determine customer PPAP requirements.
- Assist in resolving customer claims as required to support supply chain.
- Develop new product applications with GSN Technical Services.
- APQP/PPAP/FMEA and CP inputs and reviews.
- Support the Quality system in audits and customer specific requirements.
- Assist in determining and eliminating the root cause of nonconformance’s that are found at the division and/or with the customer.
- Follow department rules for safety, discipline, and work procedures within corporate management and quality guidelines.
- Follow the Cardinal Safety Rules.
- Complete all required annual safety and environmental training on a monthly basis.
- Spill prevention, containment, response and clean up or assist in cleanup of material spills if required in the testing lab or on the production floor.
- Know, understand, and follow all applicable Federal, State, and Local environmental legal requirements and practices.
- Develop working knowledge and process capabilities of other GSN production facilities.
- Develop working relationships with key technical and operating personnel in GSN.
- Be a self-starter and exhibit high motivation to manage work and be able to prioritize responsibilities as required.
- Be responsible for the safety of all individuals who work under his/her management, seeking continuous improvement related to employees’ health and safety, environment and process efficiency and customer satisfaction with the quality of products and services.
