About the role
The Product Engineer plays a crucial role in the development of new or modified Sealing/GHM products for automotive door systems. They utilize rubber and plastic injection molding, extrusion dies, and production equipment from concept through full production implementation.
Responsibilities
- Develops new or modifies existing Sealing/GHM products utilizing rubber and plastic injection molding, extrusion dies, and production equipment.
- Designs for automated assembly and low-cost manufacturing, ensuring manufacturability and tooling feasibility.
- Supports GM programs at the GM tech center as an integrated engineer.
- Works with OEM or Tier One to consult in the development process, ensuring products meet customer specifications, manufacturability, tooling feasibility, and quality objectives.
- Conceives and develops new products to meet management and customer objectives, evaluating feasibility and implementing models, vehicle installations, etc.
- Solves technical problems through application of product knowledge, engineering education, industry practices, and awareness of new technologies.
- Supports technical base processes including Project timing, DVP, DFMEA, VA/VE, Benchmarking, APQP, IMDS, Packaging, General tooling, and assembly.
- Provides professional engineering assistance and consultation to other departments on technical matters, particularly exterior and interior components.
- Organizes technical projects, manages timelines, and ensures compliance with project objectives, budgets, and specifications.
- Interprets specifications and provides technical direction to design and tooling teams, coordinating with other departments for a smooth transition.
- Coordinates with customers, providing recommendations and solutions to technical issues, and maintaining first article approval authority.
- Documents technical aspects of assigned projects and ensures proper data retention.
- Visits customers with Sales or Senior Engineering personnel on an assigned basis.
- Reports weekly on progress and workload status.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering related field with 2-5 years of experience in the field or related area.
- 2+ years of experience with Catia V5 and UG NX 11, including the ability to review designs, cut sections, etc.
- Knowledge of materials (plastics and metals) and experience in automotive interior and exterior type components with plastic injection, two-shot injection, roll forming, stamping, and aluminum extrusion.
- Knowledge of Team Center and GM ECR process as an integrated supplier.
- Experience with FEA analysis for CLD, insertion/extraction, APQP, PPAP, DVP&R, DFMEA, PFMEA, GD&T, B-side attaching scheme development, 5S philosophy, 6 Sigma & Lean Manufacturing, BOM Management - Engineering Change Control, strong technical ability with materials and manufacturing processes, high self-motivation, bias for action, strong communication, presentation, and organizational skills, and good interpersonal skills.
Qualifications
- Strong technical ability with knowledge of materials and manufacturing and assembly processes.
- Familiarity with FEA Analysis for CLD, Insertion/Extraction.
- Experience with B-side attaching scheme development – attachment of parts to sheet metal and/or other parts in an assembly.
- Understanding of 5S philosophy, 6 Sigma & Lean Manufacturing.
- Experience with APQP, PPAP, DVP&R, DFMEA, PFMEA, GD&T.
- Strong technical ability with knowledge of materials and manufacturing and assembly processes.
- High self-motivation and bias for action.
- Strong communications, presentation, and organization skills.
- Good interpersonal skills.
