Product Engineer
About the role
The Product Engineer plays a crucial role in the development and implementation of new or modified Sealing/GHM products for automotive door systems. They are responsible for designing and developing products that meet customer specifications, manufacturability, and quality objectives. Additionally, they support GM programs at the Tech Center and provide technical assistance to other departments.
Responsibilities
- Works with OEM or Tier One to consult in the development process to ensure that the product meets all customer requirements, manufacturability, tooling feasibility, and quality objectives.
- Conceives and develops new products to meet management and customer objectives, incorporating government and market needs.
- Solves technical problems through application of product knowledge, engineering education, industry practices, and awareness of new technologies.
- Supports all technical base processes including Project timing, DVP, DFMEA, VA/VE, Benchmarking, APQP, IMDS, Packaging, General tooling, and assembly.
- Provides professional engineering assistance and consultation to other departments on technical matters relating to Exterior and Interior components, and supports sales and cost estimation on an assigned basis.
- Organizes technical projects (program requests, cost estimates, program plans, etc.), evaluates alternatives, and initiates necessary activities to meet project objectives within a time and monetary budget.
- Reports weekly on progress and workload status, coordinates projects with guidance from supervisor and lead engineers, and has first article approval authority.
- Documents technical aspects of assigned projects and ensures proper data retention.
- VISITS customers with Sales or Senior Engineering personnel on an assigned basis.
- RECOMMENDS design approaches and solutions to technical problems directly to customers on routine matters and seeks assistance from peers, other departments, and engineering management on critical issues.
- TRACKS open issues, TRACKS program against budget, SUPPORTS gate review process.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering related field with 2-5 years of experience in the field or related area.
- 2+ years of experience with Catia V5 and UG NX 11, able to review designs, cut sections, etc.
- Knowledge of materials (plastics and metals).
- Knowledge of Team Center and GM ECR process as an integrated supplier.
- Experience in automotive interior and exterior type components with plastic injection, two-shot injection, roll forming, stamping, and aluminum extrusion.
- Familiarity with FEA analysis for CLD, insertion/extraction.
- Experience with APQP, PPAP, DVP&R, DFMEA, PFMEA, GD&T.
- Experience with B-side attaching scheme development – attachment of parts to sheet metal and/or other parts in an assembly.
- Familiarity with 5S philosophy, 6 Sigma & Lean Manufacturing.
- BOM Management – Engineering Change Control.
- Strong technical ability with knowledge of materials and manufacturing and assembly processes.
- A high level of self-motivation and bias for action.
- Strong communications, presentation, and organization skills.
- Ability to directly interact with customers while maintaining a professional image.
- Good interpersonal skills.
Qualifications
- Must have a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering related field.
- At least 2-5 years of relevant experience.
- Proficiency in Catia V5 and UG NX 11.
- Knowledge of materials (plastics and metals).
