Product Engineer

About the Role

Responsible for the design and development of trailer suspension systems and components. Provides technical support of current products to ensure they exceed the expectations of production facilities and customers.

Responsibilities

• Collaborates with Engineering Supervisor and Program Managers to create and maintain priorities, schedules, and metrics.
• Leads product engineering activities for new products as assigned using the SPPD process.
• Develops project plans, deliverables, work activities, and resources necessary to complete assigned projects.
• Creates 3D models, assembly layouts, drawings, and specifications to ensure proper fit, form, and function of designs.
• Creates drawings of suspension components and assemblies for prototype construction and testing at Hendrickson’s R&D facility; assists in testing when applicable.
• Works closely with test engineering to ensure new products and changes to current products are appropriately specified and validated.
• Communicates design intent and critical design requirements through the AQP process.
• Specifies and approves PPAP requirements as assigned.
• Works with customers and production facilities to ensure existing products exceed expectations.
• Reviews and approves product deviations as assigned.
• Assists in the creation and continuous improvement of best practices for suspension products.
• Works closely with internal manufacturing, purchasing, and quality departments, as well as outside suppliers, to obtain optimal solutions to design problems.
• Creates and presents material for management review.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or similar discipline.
• 5-8 years in a manufacturing business, with experience in vehicle structural design (preferably heavy or medium-duty truck).
• Exposure to vehicle dynamics, structural analysis, fatigue analysis, and finite element analysis preferred.
• Strong fundamentals of design knowledge required.
• Solid modeling experience using 3D modeling software required; PTC Creo preferred.
• Strong drafting skills, including knowledge of dimensioning and tolerance practices per ANSI Y14.5.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
• Exposure to project management skills and techniques a plus.
• Self-motivated with good organization and planning skills.
• Knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes related to welding, stamping, forming, machining, casting, forging, and fasteners preferred.
• Computer literacy with Windows environment.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills to develop good working relationships with suppliers, internal production personnel, sales group, staff, and customers.

Physical Demands

• Frequent sitting and work at a computer for extended periods of time.
• Occasional travel as required.
