Product Development Specialist - Materials Development
About the role
The Product Development Specialist position offers an opportunity to transition from other private, public, government, or military experience to a 3M career. You will collaborate with innovative 3Mers around the world, assuming technical leadership on New Product Introduction (NPI) and New Technology Introduction (NTI) initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative people around the world.
- Formulate, develop, and characterize materials for cable accessory applications.
- Engage in raw material qualifications for existing products.
- Design and launch new products from prototype development over feasibility demonstration to commercial scale-up.
- Interface with cross-functional team members (marketing, manufacturing, supply chain, sales, technical service, quality, regulatory, etc.) to ensure successful program delivery.
- Generate intellectual property positions, including invention submissions, patents, and 3M trade secrets.
- Lead technical interactions with corporate, group, and division labs to identify new technologies, processes, and materials to be applied to the Energy Markets.
- Develop and commercialize products to efficiently, reliably, and sustainably deliver energy to customers around the world.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field (verified prior to start).
- Three (3) years of product development, engineering, or technical service in a private, public, government, or military environment.
- Master’s degree or higher from an accredited institution (preferred).
- Experience with silicone, EPDM, and similar rubbers, rubber formulations, and production processes.
- Experience with analytical methods for materials characterization.
- Experience with rubber compounding and related processes.
- Knowledge of high or medium voltage electrical systems.
- Experience with industry standards and regulations (e.g., IEC, IEEE, CENELEC, etc.).
- Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and customer-first mindset.
- Eagerness to learn and willingness to start on new topics.

- Legal authorization to work in the country of employment without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status).

Schedule
This role follows an on-site working model, requiring the employee to work at least four days a week at the 3M Center in Austin, TX. Travel may include up to 15% domestic or international.
Pay
The expected compensation range for this position is $145,676 - $178,049, which includes base pay plus variable incentive pay, if eligible. This range represents a good faith estimate for this position. The specific compensation offered to a candidate may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's relevant knowledge, training, skills, work location, and/or experience.
