About The Role
The Discovery team at Whatnot plays a critical role in shaping how users find and engage with content, products, sellers, and categories. This role focuses on enhancing the buyer experience through discovery surfaces such as feeds, notifications, and ad experiences, ensuring relevance, trustworthiness, and excitement.
You will be instrumental in designing intuitive and engaging experiences that connect buyers with relevant sellers, shows, and products. Your work will extend into adjacent areas like notifications and native advertising, helping to increase user engagement and retention.
You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including product managers, engineers, and fellow designers, to explore ideas, iterate on solutions, and deliver high-quality designs.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience designing digital products, preferably in consumer marketplaces or social platforms
- Strong visual and interaction design fundamentals
- Portfolio demonstrating craft, clarity of thinking, and end-to-end user experience focus
- Curiosity about how design supports user needs and business outcomes
- Experience working on consumer-facing products with high visibility and iteration cycles
- Excellent collaboration skills with product managers, engineers, and other designers
- Willingness to learn quickly, ask insightful questions, and incorporate feedback
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- High attention to detail and a commitment to refining work until it meets quality standards

- Experience designing marketplaces, feeds, messaging, or notification systems
- Interest in personalization, discovery algorithms, or growth-oriented product features
- Passion for live commerce, collecting, or online community spaces
Responsibilities
- Design thoughtful, intuitive user experiences across buyer discovery surfaces on mobile and web platforms
- Contribute to the Messaging Platform to bring relevant, engaging content to buyers at optimal moments
- Help shape ad experiences within discovery surfaces to balance relevance, seller value, and ecosystem health
- Create flows, wireframes, prototypes, and polished UI designs that clearly communicate design intent
- Partner closely with product, engineering, data, and design teams to explore ideas, test hypotheses, and iterate on solutions
- Participate in design critiques, feedback sessions, and rapid iteration cycles to improve user experience
- Pay attention to detail while maintaining alignment with broader user and business goals
- Stay informed about industry trends and incorporate best practices into design work
