About the role
The Product Design Engineer at Fontaine Commercial Trailer, Inc. is responsible for designing and validating new trailer products, collaborating with various teams, and ensuring compliance with industry standards.
Responsibilities
- Utilize fundamental engineering strategies to design and validate new trailer products.
- Work closely with Sales, Operations, Design, and Supply Chain teams to design, document, source, and build both clean sheet trailer designs and trailer components.
- Interact with key vendors and customers directly.
- Analyze, model, and draft new components utilizing the engineering CAE suite (Siemens NX and ANSYS) from start to finish in conjunction with building and testing physical samples.
- Represent the Design Engineering Team with professionalism and integrity when communicating with the customer, cross-functional teams, as well as the entire organization.
- Research, develop, design, and test mechanical parts, components, and assemblies needed for prototypes and final products.
- Aid in developing and implementing design procedures.
- Aid in generating Bills of Materials and processing ECRs/ECNs for product requirements.
- Support manufacturing floor through lean manufacturing events as well as sales and purchasing functions as required.
- Assist in warranty analysis to improve existing products by analyzing and finding root cause and designing solutions to address field issues.
- Develop and implement cost-saving ideas including research, selection, and validation of outsourced products.
- Design and implement commercial trailers to drive company's success and growth.
Requirements
- Self-motivated and passionate about continuous learning.
- Strong communication skills.
- Experience with transportation industry standards (NHTSA, DOT, FMVSS, SAE) and testing product design to regulated standards.
- Strong mechanical engineering skillset in strength of materials, stress analysis, fatigue life, welding.
- Experience in Lean Six Sigma, Kaizen Continuous Improvement, VA/VE Projects.
Qualifications
- Minimum education of Bachelors of Science Degree: Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of experience, preferably in trailer, heavy equipment, or OEM transportation industry.
- Demonstrated efficiency in computer software including Siemens NX, ANSYS, Microsoft Office, Epicor ERP or similar system experience.
