About the Role
This is a foundational hire for the legal and compliance team of a rapidly growing fintech, and it comes with built-in opportunity for professional growth and development. This will be a broad-based role, focused primarily on regulatory and operational matters, along with commercial contracting support. This is an ideal opportunity for a rock-solid financial services regulatory attorney with a desire to become an in-house generalist. It could also be a great match for a fintech generalist that wants to develop subject matter expertise in the lending space.
Preference for candidates near our headquarters in New York, NY or the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area. Limited travel is expected, primarily for corporate gatherings and industry conferences. This role will report to the Chief Legal & Compliance Officer.
Responsibilities
- Serve as an in-house subject matter expert on the consumer and small business lending regulations, tracking relevant changes and directives that may impact the company or our partners.
- Take a lead role in establishing regulatory requirements for new product development and implementation.
- Support the ClarityPay team with accurate and pragmatic regulatory advice and in-depth legal risk assessments relevant to the company’s development and launch of new financial products.
- Support compliance and customer service teams on the resolution of inquiries and complaints from customers and regulators.
- Support compliance, business development, customer service, and other internal stakeholders in fielding legal and regulatory questions.
- Provide legal support for ClarityPay’s Compliance and Operational Risk Program.
- Support commercial contracting efforts with merchants and vendors.
- Collaborate on the development and improvement of internal policies, procedures, and processes.
- Project-manage various key legal and compliance projects.
- Support or own other legal projects as determined by the Chief Legal & Compliance Officer.
Requirements
- JD from a top tier law school and a license to practice in good standing in primary state of residence.
- 7+ years total legal experience.
- At least 2 years of law firm experience.
- Deep experience advising clients on consumer financial services matters.
- Contract drafting and negotiation experience.
- Strong legal research skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to learn and leverage new technology quickly and effectively, including hands-on experience leveraging modern AI tools for legal work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in fintech lending.
- Broad legal experience covering regulatory, transactional, and dispute resolution matters.
- Prior experience performing in-depth legal risk assessments on consumer financial services regulations.
- Experience supporting the compliance function of a consumer lender or lending platform.
- Experience working with regulators to quickly and effectively resolve inquiries, complaints, or information requests.

Pay
Salary Range: $180,000 to $220,000 per year. Salary range is an approximation and will depend on market data applied to factors like the candidate’s skills and experience, geographic location, and compensation/equity mix.
