About the role
The Produce Manager-in-Training position aims to assist customers in their shopping experience by leading the Produce team. This role serves as an understudy to the Produce Manager and Perishable Manager.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct supervision of the activities of other members of the produce team in a manner that is operationally effective, motivating, and respectful.
- Aid the Produce Manager in clearly communicating departmental goals and implementing plans to achieve those goals.
- Promote a positive team atmosphere that includes cooperation, teamwork, high morale, positive interpersonal interactions, and recognition for a job well done.
- Support the Produce Manager in providing effective coaching, corrective actions, and performance evaluations to improve individual and team performance.
- Address employee relations issues and, if needed, work with the Produce Manager, Store Management, and Human Resource team to resolve issues.
- Manage labor costs effectively, balancing the customer's need for service with the company's need to monitor expenditures.
- Resolve customer complaints professionally and recognize when it is appropriate to involve a member of the store management team.
- Adhere to Cosentino Customer Service Standards and promote new items and specials through merchandising and displays.
- Be knowledgeable about department products, procedures, and policies to accurately answer customer questions.
- Manage inventory processes at all levels, including accurate counting and tracking, efficient planning and ordering of product, removing damaged, un-saleable, or returnable product from shelves, and following proper procedures for damage claims.
- Inspect product for freshness, damage, and dates and utilize proper rotation techniques.
- Label or price any merchandise that requires marking and know how to obtain price signs when necessary.
- Comply with all health regulations, sanitation guidelines, and safety procedures for the department and the store.
- Operate, clean, and maintain all equipment safely and competently.
- Maintain productivity standards to produce desired team and individual results.
- Keep the work area and the department clean and safe for customers and coworkers.
- Show strong verbal and interpersonal skills for positive customer and peer interactions.
- Show basic math and reading skills required for the position.
Essential Knowledge
- A valid driver’s license is required for deliveries.
- A food handling permit must be obtained within the first 14 days of employment.
- A minimum of (2) years of previous experience in retail produce management is required.
- Completion of ongoing training and development as listed on the Cosentino Learning Plan is required.
Non-Essential Knowledge
- A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
Skills
- A valid driver’s license is required for deliveries.
- A food handling permit must be obtained within the first 14 days of employment.
- A minimum of (2) years of previous experience in retail produce management is required.

Physical Abilities
- Reaching overhead with both arms up to a maximum of 72 inches, twisting at the waist, and lifting objects with both hands weighing up to 25 lbs.
- Pushing and pulling grocery items to the proper locations as needed, up to a peak force of 50 lbs.
- Standing and walking for long periods of time on tile, asphalt, concrete, or other hard surfaces.
- Occasionally lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs.
- Bending and squatting, at times all the way to floor level.
- Able to work in colder conditions of the grocery coolers and freezers.
