About the Role

To process and stock quality merchandise on shelves and displays in a careful, clean, neat, and expedient manner. Ensure a variety of product is fresh and appealingly displayed for customers while maintaining excellent customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Complete every section of the produce associate training program.
  • Provide an open-door atmosphere conducive to high associate morale and excellent customer service.
  • Achieve the highest associate morale in the industry by managing in a style that is Respectful, Supportive, and Totally Team Oriented (RSTO).
  • Commit to the “Golden Rule” and work with other associates to build a strong produce team.
  • Promote the company image as a service-oriented operation where every associate will greet, assist, render efficient service, and thank customers promptly and courteously.
  • Ensure the department achieves performance standards outlined in the work and merchandising plan.
  • Possess good communication skills, conduct and facilitate department meetings, delegate tasks, and use initiative and judgment to solve problems.
  • Ensure all new department associates receive proper review, job descriptions, goals, and objectives.
  • Ensure fair and consistent treatment in administering discipline to promote high associate morale.
  • Assist the department manager with inventory, security, and expense control.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures, including all state and federal laws applicable to the industry (e.g., labor/scheduling laws, dress code, sanitation regulations).
  • Resolve customer complaints to the full satisfaction of the customer.
  • Merchandise and sign the department in accordance with community needs.
  • Develop the best-trained produce team in the industry through onboarding, e-learnings, and checklists within 30 days of hire.
  • Order, receive, unload, and store deliveries; store, price, date, rotate, and stock product for display and sale.
  • Keep all produce products rotated according to company policy and product code dates, using the oldest products first (first in, first out).
  • Effectively control proper storage to limit shrink and damaged goods.
  • Achieve and maintain department merchandising goals and standards (e.g., gross profit, presentation) in cooperation with store management.
  • Assist the department manager with planning work schedules and breaks, ensuring payroll consistency and adherence to wage and hour policies.
  • Maintain accurate records (receiving logs, invoices, inventory) and forward required documents for accounting purposes in a timely manner.
  • Respond promptly to all location mail, reports, and records.
  • Offer product samples, answer product questions, assist in finding or suggesting products, and prepare special orders (e.g., fruit bowls, baskets, platters).
  • Minimize department expenses without compromising conditions or customer service (e.g., payroll, supplies, insurance costs).
  • Guarantee outstanding product quality and presentation through cooperation with store management and merchandisers.
  • Control backroom and storage operations to ensure proper supply and product quality.
  • Monitor cooler and display area temperatures to ensure product quality; report refrigeration failures immediately.
  • Practice the “Cleaner’s Creed” and proper sanitation procedures.
  • Keep the sales and work area clean, orderly, and free from safety hazards; report hazards to management.
  • Exercise proper safety practices when lifting and moving product.
  • Ensure all product labels, signs, and prices align with the product.

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Restock and use supply items efficiently to eliminate waste and maintain low supply costs.
  • Verify price checks for customers as needed.
  • Ensure department associates adhere to company dress code standards (e.g., name tags, personal hygiene).
  • Notify management of associate theft, customer shoplifting, unauthorized markdowns, or property defacement.
  • Clean walls, fans, and drains in produce coolers, display cases, and work areas.
  • Perform other duties assigned by management.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful experience in produce operations (e.g., merchandising, ordering, inventory, pricing).
  • Ability to display initiative and work with limited supervision.
  • Must be ServSafe certified.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English, with the ability to follow instructions.
  • Ability to work across multiple stores and a schedule based on business needs.
  • Authorized to work within the U.S.

Physical Demands

  • Occasionally (1-33%): Sitting, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, climbing up to 8 feet, and crouching.
  • Frequently (34-66%): Carrying and lifting up to 50 lbs, pushing and pulling up to 250 lbs, bending, and reaching at waist or overhead; twisting of back and neck; contact with sharp objects.
  • Continuously (67-100%): Standing and walking on tile or concrete floors, handling, feeling, talking, seeing, smelling, and hearing; repetitive movement of the entire body.

Safety Risk Factors

  • Occasionally (1-33%): Loud noise, slippery or crowded floor surfaces, hazardous equipment (mechanical moving parts), contact with skin irritants, toxic exposure (see material safety data sheet), nuisance dust, fumes, sprays, and hazardous cleaning solutions.
  • Frequently (34-66%): Twisting of back and neck, contact with sharp objects.

Machines, Tools, and Equipment Utilized

  • Knives, case cutter, wrapper, scale, pineapple core machine, pallet jack, power jack, pressure washer, crate opener, trash compactor, pricing gun.

Working Conditions

Working environment is inside and within cold temperatures.

Pay

The hiring range for this position is $19.40 - $25.20 per hour. Actual salaries will vary depending on factors including but not limited to education, experience, qualifications, and internal equity.
