Process Principal Engineer

This position is responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing refinery processes, including overseeing the production of petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. The role ensures safe and efficient refinery operations, troubleshoots manufacturing issues, and implements new technologies to improve production. The successful candidate will collaborate with maintenance, safety, and environmental teams, interface with consultants and vendors, and mentor entry-level Process Engineers.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering
• 15+ years of engineering experience
• 10+ years of combined refinery process engineering and refinery operations experience, including a broad range of process unit technologies
• Experience with capital and operating cost estimating and economic analysis
• Experience leading Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) efforts using tools such as What-If studies, HAZOP studies, or Fault Tree Analysis; familiarity with MOC, HAZOP, PSV, SOL, and IOW development and evaluations
• Experience performing chemical process modeling of unit operations (single or plant-wide) using software such as PRO-II, HYSYS, or PROMAX
• Strong computer skills with Excel and Word
• Strong mathematical, reasoning, and problem-solving skills; ability to create/edit P&IDs and PFDs
• Technical writing skills
• Fluent in English (oral and written communication)
• Mechanical aptitude, analytic, and problem-solving skills
• Ability to work in a team environment as a lead or active member
• Ability to manage time and resources effectively
• Ability to adjust schedule to meet company deadlines and address unexpected issues

Responsibilities

• Provide technical support for plant operations, including daily monitoring, troubleshooting, process optimization, and capital project design
• Identify, develop, and execute small projects to improve safety, environmental performance, and margin capture
• Develop scope for large capital projects with similar goals
• Mentor and supervise engineers and technicians in the refinery
• Propose new work procedures to enhance efficiency and effectiveness
• Assist in developing Key Process Indicators and other process monitoring tools
• Prioritize group projects and coordinate with overall refinery needs
• Collaborate with other refinery groups (Safety, Environmental, Operations, Controls, Economics, and Purchasing) to identify compliance requirements and product specifications
• Interact with outside vendors, contract process engineering services, and industry groups
• Develop or assist in individual equipment specifications and provide recommendations on technology and bid selection
• Ensure timely review of drawing reviews and Management of Change Orders within assigned responsibility
• Participate in equipment inspections, process safety reviews, and process hazard analysis
• Support refinery turnarounds, including 24-hour shift coverage and process callout requirements
