About the role

The Federal Group at Burns & McDonnell is seeking a Process Engineer to support our expanding work with the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Department of Defense (DOD).

Responsibilities

  • Experience with nuclear system design, safety class/safety significant systems, and NQA-1 programs.
  • Experience with energetics/explosives system design, including synthesis, handling, mixing, and charging.
  • Experience applying nuclear, chemical, or explosive safety requirements into designs.
  • Project execution experience, from process studies to detailed design and EPC project execution.
  • Understanding of project development steps and level of detail required in each step.
  • Development of PFDs, P&IDs, equipment sizing, and specifications.
  • Completion of instrument process data and specifications.
  • Discipline-level leadership on multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Development of process models using commercial software or custom Excel models.
  • Supporting business development efforts by creating engineering estimates and proposal development.
  • Solving complex problems requiring adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Leading discipline design for large projects and delegating tasks to team members.
  • Executing work and resolving issues in a team environment.
  • Demonstrating critical thinking, analytical problem-solving, attention to detail, facilitation, team building, and collaboration.
  • Performing quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.
  • Traveling for project support, approximately 25%.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited program with 3 years of process engineering experience.
  • EPC project experience preferred.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program, passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and 3 years of process engineering experience.
  • EPC project experience preferred.
  • Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering with 2 years of process engineering experience.
  • EPC project experience preferred.
  • 5 years of process engineering experience preferred.
  • Expert knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of process design codes (ASME, ANSI, API, PIP, NACE).
  • Strong computer skills, including process simulation software (e.g., Hysys and Aspen).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to lead discipline design for large projects and delegate tasks.
  • Ability to resolve issues in a team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE or DOD Security Clearance required.

Pay

$115,000.00 - $240,000.00 yearly. The total annual compensation package includes a base salary and participation in a discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
