About the Role
The process engineer uses understanding of process fundamentals, process equipment, refinery practices, and specific technologies to ensure safe, environmentally friendly, reliable, and optimal refinery operation. This role coordinates and influences the achievement of these objectives using data-driven critical thinking.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (required)
- In lieu of the above education requirements, an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
- Two or more years of process engineering experience or equivalent ability in the refining industry (required)
- No licensure or certification required
- Physical ability to work on and around industrial equipment, including climbing stairs, ladders, and working in confined spaces
- Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in designated areas (hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, boots, hearing protection, respirator)
Responsibilities
- Provides troubleshooting and optimization assistance for operations on assigned unit(s)
- Conducts daily performance monitoring, including mass balance, energy consumption, yields, and “process unit health” performance indicators
- Generates, analyzes, interprets, and disseminates performance indicators and unit operations data for assigned units
- Evaluates catalyst usage and performance
- Assists senior engineers with data collection and analysis for identification of short- and long-term process changes to improve unit(s) profitability and optimize efficiency
- Conducts process operations analysis and economic evaluation using simulation software
- Participates in the evaluation of equipment design and process development to balance process requirements, economics, operator effectiveness, and environment/safety objectives
- Participates in operator process training classes, Management of Change (MOC) development, process hazard analysis (PHAs), and piping and instrumentation diagram/drawing (P&ID) verification
- Develops and maintains critical cross-functional relationships (e.g., refinery economics, operations, lab, maintenance) to optimize unit performance to constraints
- Employs industry best practices and standards to compare actual operation to the intended process design, identifying advantages and disadvantages
