Process Chemist
About the role
The Process Chemist will play a critical role in developing analytical methods, conducting process chemistry, and leading laboratory experimentation. This role is cross-functional, reporting into the Denver R&D Center, and involves moving between fermentation and chemical technology teams.
Responsibilities
- Develop analytical methods from scratch including GC, HPLC, and IC for various process streams such as fermentation, distillation, extraction, and catalytic processes.
- Lead experimental campaigns to determine the viability of processes or technologies for scaling up.
- Create data infrastructure that supports financial models and pilot plant decisions.
- Develop method transfer protocols for pilot plant interface and scale-up validation.
- Design experiments with the model in mind, ensuring data quality is robust and defensible.
- Build methods for multi-component process streams, explaining the decisions made and their rationale.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Biology with a Master's or PhD preferred.
- At least 5-8 years of experience in a corporate R&D environment, with a focus on analytical chemistry lab experience in fermentation, chemical catalysis, or bioprocess development.
- Experience in the biofuels, chemicals, or petroleum industries.
- Proficiency in gas chromatography (GC), liquid chromatography (HPLC), and ion-exchange chromatography (IC).
- Experience in method development for multi-component process streams.
- Pilot plant or production facility interface experience, including method transfer, scale-up data generation, and process stream validation at non-bench scale.
- Citizenship or permanent residency status in the United States.
Qualifications
Strong analytical skills, ability to design experiments, and a track record of successful method development are essential. The ideal candidate should have a clear career progression from lab bench to pilot plant and beyond.
Skills
- Strong analytical chemistry background.
- Experience with gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, and ion-exchange chromatography.
- Ability to develop and validate analytical methods for complex process streams.
- Experience with method transfer and scale-up validation.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, especially in a cross-functional setting.
Benefits
Opportunities to contribute to groundbreaking research and drive innovation in decarbonization efforts. The role offers a chance to make a significant impact on the future of sustainable energy solutions.
Pay
Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
Schedule
Full-time position with flexible working hours to accommodate the demands of the role.
