Role Summary
The Process Chemical Technical Specialist provides field-based technical expertise supporting refinery and hydrocarbon processing customers through laboratory analysis, crude characterization, fouling assessment, process modeling, and operational optimization activities. This role combines advanced analytical testing, reliability analysis, technical software applications, and customer-facing consulting to support customer performance, operational reliability, and value delivery from Dorf Ketal chemical treatment programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Field Laboratory Operations
- Perform on-site laboratory testing and analytical evaluations at customer facilities.
- Conduct chemical and process analyses including pH, iron, ammonia, solids, ASP, brine extractions, amines, filterable solids, and Wiehe compatibility testing.
- Operate portable laboratory equipment and portable ion chromatography systems.
- Maintain laboratory equipment calibration, testing integrity, and data quality standards.
- Ensure accurate sample handling, chain-of-custody practices, and documentation.
- Crude Characterization & Compatibility Analysis
- Conduct crude oil characterization and compatibility assessments to support crude opportunity evaluations.
- Perform blending studies and fouling risk evaluations.
- Analyze crude behavior and identify potential operational impacts.
- Develop recommendations to improve crude selection and processing reliability.
- ACRIS™ Technical Support
- Install, configure, and support ACRIS™ software applications.
- Train customer personnel on system utilization and interpretation of results.
- Troubleshoot software and analytical issues.
- Support adoption and utilization of ACRIS™ across customer sites.
- Reliability & Fouling Investigations
- Investigate exchanger fouling, contamination events, and process performance concerns.
- Analyze operational data and laboratory results to identify root causes and performance trends.
- Support reliability improvement initiatives through technical assessments and recommendations.
- Document findings and communicate conclusions to customer and internal stakeholders.
- Desalter Performance & Process Modeling
- C Conduct desalter performance assessments and field sampling activities.
- Utilize OLI and related process modeling tools to evaluate salt point behavior and process risks.
- Analyze brine chemistry and amine contamination impacts.
- Develop technical reports identifying optimization opportunities and reliability risks.
- Technical Consulting & Customer Support
- Provide technical support to customer operations, engineering, reliability, and planning teams.
- Participate in operational reviews and corrective action discussions.
- Support customer decision-making through data-driven recommendations.
- Assist commercial teams in demonstrating technical value and supporting customer retention and growth initiatives.
- Reporting & Knowledge Management
- Prepare technical reports, presentations, and customer summaries.
- Maintain detailed records of field activities, testing results, recommendations, and project outcomes.
- Deliver weekly activity and technical progress reports.
- Communicate technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrate ownership and accountability in all customer interactions and technical activities.
- Operate with a "Be THE Solution" mindset by proactively identifying challenges and driving resolution.
- Build collaborative relationships across technical, commercial, and operational teams.
- Support a culture of safety, integrity, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- Model high ethical standards and reinforce trust with customers and internal stakeholders.
- Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Petroleum Engineering, or related technical discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in refinery operations, process chemicals, crude characterization, technical services, or related industrial environments.
- Experience conducting laboratory testing and analytical evaluations.
- Ability to travel extensively to customer locations.
- Strong technical writing and presentation skills.
- Valid driver's license and ability to work safely in refinery and industrial environments.
- Experience supporting refinery crude units, desalters, or fouling mitigation programs.
- Experience with ACRIS™, OLI, AspenTech, Petro-SIM, or similar process modeling platforms.
- Knowledge of refinery reliability and process optimization practices.
- Experience supporting customer-facing technical service programs.
- Familiarity with hydrocarbon processing, specialty chemical treatment programs, and crude opportunity evaluations.
- Adhere to all company safety policies, customer site requirements, and regulatory standards.
- Participate actively in safety initiatives, reporting processes, and continuous improvement activities.
- Immediately identify and communicate unsafe conditions, risks, or compliance concerns.
- Demonstrate leadership in maintaining a safe and environmentally responsible work environment.
