About the Role
This position serves as a Victim Services Officer within the Probation Officer job series, focusing on victim-related duties without direct contact with probation clients. Placement will be determined based on qualifications and relevant experience. The role is part of a progressive job series, and the selected applicant may be hired as either a Probation Officer or Senior Probation Officer, depending on district needs.
Responsibilities
- Performs case management duties, including documenting client-related activities, reviewing documents and court orders, and managing e-files.
- Conducts face-to-face appointments and interviews.
- Performs ongoing assessments to determine treatment needs and community risk.
- Develops case plans to guide supervision and ensure compliance with court-imposed conditions.
- Assesses, prioritizes, and responds to critical incidents and potential risks in the field and office.
- De-escalates hostile or agitated clients and potentially violent situations.
- Completes reports to assess criminal behavior and provides sentencing options to the court.
- Submits comprehensive compliance reports to the court, including revocation documents, while protecting confidential information.
- Updates the court as needed and provides professional testimony.
- Informs staff, stakeholders, and the public on the Victim Rights Amendment.
- Responds to community feedback regarding clients and probationers.
- Collects victim statements and positions for court proceedings.
- Collaborates with other judicial districts and states on victim-related concerns.
- Attends meetings and completes required training.
- Occasionally directs helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, or temporary employees.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, sociology, psychology, human services, or a related field.
- OR an associate’s degree in the above fields plus two (2) years of work-related experience in criminal justice, law enforcement, social work, psychology, or a related field.
- OR a high school diploma or G.E.D. plus four (4) years of work-related experience in the fields listed above (substituted year-for-year for formal education).
- Work-related experience in criminal justice, law enforcement, social work, psychology, or a similar field.
Skills
- Comprehensive, practical knowledge of work processes.
- Ability to complete a broad range of tasks, sometimes complex, with minimal supervision.
- High level of tact and ability to respond to aggressive or stressful interpersonal interactions.
- Ability to de-escalate hostile or potentially violent situations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for report writing, court testimony, and stakeholder interactions.
Work Environment
- Occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions, hazards, or risks.
- Occasional outside work.
- Office environment with potential exposure to hostile or irate individuals, communicable diseases, or bodily fluids.
Physical Requirements
- Exerting up to 35 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
