The Family and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner provides medical and mental health services to patients admitted to ARS facilities and throughout treatment within the continuum of care.

Schedule

Clinical Schedule: 8am–5pm, 7 days a week. Ideal candidates can work weekends and on-call (telephonic on-call).

Responsibilities

• Provides excellent medical care aligned with the ARS philosophy, including establishing rapport, gathering data, determining treatment readiness, and applying accepted criteria for diagnosing substance use disorders.
• Screens for co-occurring primary mental health issues and substance use disorders (SUD), including psychoactive substance toxicity, intoxication, and withdrawal symptoms.
• Demonstrates knowledge of medications, assessment for complications, detoxification protocols, and general prescribing practices.
• Screens for danger to self or others using evidence-based tools (Columbia Suicide Screening Rating Scale (CSSRS) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9)).
• Analyzes and interprets data to determine treatment recommendations and priorities.
• Screens for nutrition deficiencies and intervenes or refers for nutrition consultation as appropriate.
• Screens for pain and implements individualized treatment strategies, including pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic approaches.
• Demonstrates proficiency using the electronic health record (EHR) for required documentation, ensuring compliance with company policies, state regulations, and Joint Commission standards. Documents include:
  • Psychiatric Evaluation
  • Physical Examinations
  • Medical Progress Notes
  • Medical Discharge Summaries
  • Medication and ancillary orders
  • Allergies
  • Diagnosis and updates
  • Laboratory data interpretation and documentation
  • HIV and STD results (positive or negative) reviewed and documented in the medical record
• Understands ASAM criteria and Medical Needs Criteria, documenting decision-making and treatment planning accordingly.
• Fulfills on-call responsibilities, including providing contact and backup numbers, being responsive and available when assigned, and remaining within one hour of the facility.
• Collaborates with the Medical Director to:
  • Develop cost-effective methods for medically necessary therapeutic services.
  • Support the highest standards of patient care.
  • Review all level-of-care changes and provide peer reviews when required.
  • Provide support to Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and students as needed.
• Understands and abides by all safety, risk, and infection control guidelines.
• Performs other tasks and duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Graduated from an accredited Nursing Master's Program with a Family Nurse Practitioner or higher and a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner degree.
• Experience in Addiction Medicine/Primary Behavioral Health preferred.
• Familiarity with JCAHO, ASAM Criteria, and other healthcare standards preferred.
• Ability to apply Continuous Quality Improvement and Performance Improvement Team philosophy.
• Strong communication skills to relate to all levels of facility staff; self-motivated and confident.
• Licensed to practice as a Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner in the appropriate state.
• DEA license to prescribe controlled medications, including completion of at least eight (8) hours of training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.
• Depending on the state, may require a protocol agreement completed by the NP and Medical Director.
