Position Overview

The Patient Financial Counselor serves as a key resource for patients by providing clear, compassionate guidance on the financial aspects of healthcare. This role supports patients in understanding their financial responsibilities, navigating insurance coverage, and identifying available financial assistance options.

Position Details

  • Employment Type: PRN (as needed)
  • Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM (hours may vary)
  • Department: Patient Financial Services / Revenue Cycle
  • Travel: None required
  • Supervisory Responsibilities: None
  • Compensation: Commensurate with experience

Key Responsibilities

  • Estimate patient financial responsibility for scheduled services
  • Explain insurance coverage, benefits, and out-of-pocket costs in a clear and professional manner
  • Aid patients with billing questions, claims issues, denials, and appeals
  • Establish payment plans and financial arrangements as appropriate
  • Support patients with financial assistance and charity care applications
  • Communicate with insurance providers and third-party payors to verify coverage and resolve issues
  • Maintain accurate records while ensuring compliance with HIPAA and confidentiality standards
  • Collaborate with internal departments and external agencies to support patient needs

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent – required
  • Experience: Medical billing, insurance, or revenue cycle experience preferred
  • Knowledge: Understanding of third-party billing and insurance processes – required
  • Preferred Qualifications: Hospital business office experience, experience with Meditech systems, knowledge of medical terminology, cash handling or payment processing experience

Employment Requirements
