Principal/Tool Engineer - Level 2 or 3

About the role

Northrop Grumman Space Systems is seeking a junior or mid-level Energetics Manufacturing Engineer (also known as a Tool Engineer) to support our Clearfield Facility in Utah. The candidate will be responsible for the concept, design, engineering, fabrication drawings, inspection requirements, procurement requirements, verification requirements, and fabrication support for tooling and equipment for aerospace applications.

Responsibilities

• Interface with review team to assure customer satisfaction with design
• Manage projects and coordinate all procurements and fabrication to meet program cost and schedule requirements
• Inspect fabricated support hardware to assure compliance to design
• Work alongside the manufacturing team to ensure overall program quality, delivery, and cost objectives are achieved
• Work with internal customers to define needed support equipment for new and existing programs
• Develop tooling concepts, creating/reviewing and improving manufacturing processes to meet customer requirements
• Work closely with tool designers to create final drawings
• Perform stress analysis to assure mechanically sound per NG requirements
• Understand/monitor cost and schedule
• Review engineering drawings and designs for manufacturability
• Travel to suppliers to support them as needed during fabrication
• Inspect tool configuration for drawing compliance, including fit, form, and function
• Support continuous improvement
• Support operations and process engineering in the use of all tooling

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline with a minimum of 5 years of technical experience in engineering, design, and fabrication of special tooling and related equipment (or 2 years minimum for Level 2)
• Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance
• Demonstrated ability to evaluate vendor and equipment capability for tooling and aerospace part production
• Experience with hand calculation analysis and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) practices
• CAD modeling experience
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Experience presenting to large audiences (20+ people) of upper management
• Experience with design for manufacturing concepts
• Experience with various inspection methods and understanding of design for inspection
• Ability to travel to suppliers to inspect equipment prior to shipment (15-20% travel)

• Tooling design and analysis experience
• Hands-on fabrication and manufacturing experience
• NX modeling experience
• Abaqus Finite Element Analysis (FEA) experience
• Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
• Tolerance stack calculations
• Strong technical writing skills
