Principal Systems Engineer

About the role

The Principal Systems Engineer performs requirements analysis and management, technical planning, systems level design, systems integration, verification and validation, cost and risk management, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems. Also performs functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into systems specifications. Analyses are performed at all levels of total system product to include: concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance, and disposal. Ensures the logistical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total system solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints.

Responsibilities

• Perform requirements management, analysis, and allocations using tools such as DOORS.
• Conceptualize, analyze, design, and oversee complex systems level architecture design.
• Perform modeling and simulation at the system level including use of model-based system engineering tools.
• Recommend tools to improve systems engineering design of a product and procedures.
• Develop systems specifications, master test plans, and other necessary artifacts.
• Provide inputs into the integrated master schedules and track program progress.
• Generate systems engineering artifacts in support of each program.
• Lead cost estimates to support engineering activities.
• Assist in verification and validation responsibilities.
• Fully understand internal systems engineering procedures and mentor entry-level engineers.
• Other related duties assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

• Master’s degree plus 7 years’ experience OR Bachelor’s degree plus 9 years’ experience in Aeronautical, Computer Science, Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, Software, or Systems Engineering.
• Eligible to obtain Security Clearance.

Skills

• DOORS requirements management tool suite.
• Microsoft Office including Excel and other desktop tools.
• Microsoft Projects.
• Systems level analysis tools such as MATLAB or equivalent.
• Systems level block diagram capture tools such as Visio.
• CAMEO Enterprise Architecture.
• Experience with EO/IR systems.
• Other related systems engineering tools.

Training

• ESD Safety Training, as dictated by Safety Department (within one year of taking position).
• Advanced DOORS requirements management training (within one year of taking position).
• Systems Engineering Simulation and Modeling concepts (within one year of taking position).
• Systems Engineering methods and procedures (within one year of taking position).
