Principal, Structural Engineering – Repair & Rehabilitation

About the role

The Principal will serve as a technical leader and as a client-facing representative responsible for delivering complex restoration, retrofit, and adaptive reuse projects. The ideal candidate is a recognized structural engineering professional with deep experience in existing structures, forensic evaluation, and rehabilitation design, and a demonstrated ability to manage projects, develop client relationships, and help grow the practice.

Responsibilities

  • Leading investigations of existing structures experiencing deterioration, distress, damage, or performance deficiencies due to environmental effects, overload, impact, fire, or aging.
  • Directing the development of repair, strengthening, retrofit, and rehabilitation solutions for complex structural systems.
  • Serving as the technical lead for evaluation of existing structures and development of recommendations for new use, increased loading, or code compliance.
  • Managing multiple concurrent projects, including scope, schedule, budget, and client communication.
  • Acting as primary client contact for repair and rehabilitation projects and maintaining and growing client relationships.
  • Preparing proposals, including scope definition, budgeting, staffing plans, and project approach.
  • Overseeing preparation of technical deliverables, including reports, calculations, drawings, specifications, and presentations.
  • Supporting forensic investigations related to structural damage, claims, failures, or performance issues.
  • Mentoring, supervising, and developing junior and mid-level engineers.
  • Contributing to practice growth through business development, client engagement, and pursuit of new opportunities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience presenting technical topics to clients.
  • Collaborating across SGH disciplines including materials science, advanced analysis, building technology, and other engineering groups.

Requirements

  • Master of Science, Master of Engineering, or Doctorate in Structural Engineering or related field required.
  • 15+ years of professional structural engineering experience with a focus on existing structures, repair, rehabilitation, and/or forensic engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required; Structural Engineer (SE) license preferred.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership in complex structural investigation, repair, retrofit, or adaptive reuse projects.
  • Recognized track record of technical excellence, innovation, and leadership within the structural engineering field.
  • Proven ability to develop and sustain strong client relationships and generate a meaningful and sustained revenue base.
  • Demonstrated business development success in a seller-doer capacity, including pursuit, win, and execution of work.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills with a commitment to developing and growing technical staff and future leaders.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and serving as a primary client and project executive contact.
  • Active participation in professional societies, technical committees, and/or publication of technical work.
  • Strong communication skills, including experience presenting to clients, stakeholders, and professional audiences.
  • Collaborative and effective across internal disciplines and external partners.
  • Commitment to SGH’s standards of ethics, quality, and professional integrity.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites as needed.

Qualifications

  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable Motor Vehicle Report.

Skills

  • Strong technical skills in structural engineering, forensic evaluation, and rehabilitation design.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience in business development and client relationship management.

Pay

The compensation range below is a good faith estimate pursuant to applicable equal pay and pay transparency laws. The actual salary offered will be based on several factors including the candidate’s experience and qualifications. Base salary is a part of SGH’s industry leading Total Compensation package. Our Total Compensation package includes base salary, pay for extra direct hours worked, an annual discretionary bonus program, generous paid time off, and health and wellness benefits with a special emphasis on substantial SGH contributions to medical insurance premiums and SGH’s Profit Sharing & 401(k) Plan.
