Principal Solutions Engineer
About the role
BetterUp is a hybrid company that values in-person collaboration. Our US hub locations include: Austin, TX; New York City, NY; San Francisco, CA; and Arlington, VA. The hybrid role will require travel up to 25% of the time for client engagements. For candidates not located near a hub, the remote role will require travel up to 40% of the time for client engagements and internal BetterUp purposes.
Responsibilities
- Serve as single-threaded owner for BetterUp's most complex, platform-defining engagements, such as Fortune 100 deployments, government, multi-region rollouts, and deals where the primary buyer is not HROperate as a trusted advisor to the ELT (CEO, CRO, CPO, CTO) on platform strategy, integration roadmap, and the long-term design of the SE function
- Bring a proprietary external network into BetterUp—CIO, CISO, and CFO-level relationships that exist before a deal starts and persist after it closes, accelerating enterprise pipeline in ways no internal team member can replicate
- Define BetterUp's integration and security narrative at the industry level—shaping how technical buyers across the market perceive the platform, not just individual accounts
- Advisory executive leadership on platform strategy, GTM motion, and SE function design
- Own and close the most complex enterprise deals: Fortune 100, government, multi-region, multi-stakeholder, long-cycle commitments
- Mentor leaders across the SE function and GTM organization; serve as a talent magnet that raises the bar for who wants to work here
Requirements
- 15+ years in Solutions Engineering, Pre-Sales, or Technical Consulting, including experience building or leading SE functions at high-growth enterprise SaaS companies
- An external reputation in enterprise SE or HR Tech—recognized by peers, referenced by customers, and credible at the CIO/CISO/CFO level before a deal begins
- A rolodex of C-suite and VP Engineering relationships across enterprise HR Tech that you can bring to BetterUp and activate on behalf of strategic deals
- Proven ability to advise executive leadership (CEO, CRO, CPO) on platform strategy, GTM motion, and SE function design
- Deep expertise across HRIS, LMS, SSO, API integration ecosystems, and enterprise compliance frameworks—advising at the architecture and strategy level
- Track record of owning and closing the most complex enterprise deals: Fortune 100, government, multi-region, multi-stakeholder, long-cycle commitments
- Build or significantly mature an SE function—not just contribute to one
- Demonstrated thought leadership: external speaking, published writing, or recognized influence on how enterprise SE practice evolves in your market

Pay
The base salary range for this role is as follows: $198,800 – $248,500 + commission: New York City, San Francisco and Seattle $178,920 – $223,650 + commission: All other locations
Schedule
This role is hybrid, requiring at least 2 days per week (or 8 days per month) in-office and up to 25% travel for client engagements. For remote roles, up to 40% travel for client engagements and internal BetterUp purposes is required.
