About the Role
Manage complex transmission, substation, distribution, gas, and/or information technology projects involving cross-functional teams, multiple disciplines, and operating areas, including contract resources. Responsible for managing scope, schedule, budget, and safety performance of multiple projects and programs, typically ranging from $1 million to $60 million. Lead project teams through business case approval, development, execution, and closeout. May also manage high-profile business initiatives with direct accountability for execution.
Position may require extended hours during storms or energy delivery emergencies.
Responsibilities
- Manage large and/or highly complex projects requiring established project management principles and techniques, ensuring delivery on time and at or below budget.
- Serve as the key interface for external customer work, including presenting billable costs and negotiating schedules.
- Collaborate with project managers, work management, and functional managers to optimize resource utilization.
- Communicate with project sponsors and key stakeholders, including executive-level presentations.
- Acquire and manage contract resources, including contractor selection, contract requisitions, change orders, payment authorizations, and performance evaluations.
- Lead and coach team members to improve performance and meet expectations; mentor less experienced colleagues.
- Acquire zoning variations and permits by presenting project details to city zoning boards and public hearings.
- Perform backup role for Manager Project Management.
- Ensure completion of business cases, budgetary approvals, project scheduling, requirements engineering, design tasks, vegetation management reviews, and project reporting.
- Conduct project financial analysis, major equipment procurement, environmental analysis, and real estate acquisition.
- Manage relationships with large customers, vendors, townships, and regulatory agencies.
- Oversee project quality assurance and change management.
Requirements
- For construction project management: Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field and 7-10 years of relevant project management experience, or 9-12 years of relevant experience without a degree.
- For non-construction project management: Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering, or related field and 7-10 years of relevant project management experience, or 9-12 years of relevant experience without a degree.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or ability to achieve PMP within two years of job entry.
- Demonstrated proficiency in managing large, complex projects using project management techniques, including:
- Planning and Control (work breakdown structures, critical path analysis, scope control).
- Issue and Risk Management (identification, assessment, and contingency planning).
- Project Management Tools (planning, scheduling, resource balancing, cost monitoring).
- Business Case Development (cost/benefit evaluations, net present value analysis).
- Progress Reporting (cost/schedule curves, status reports, earned value analysis).
- Proven leadership ability in a high-performance culture.
- Demonstrated ability to build consensus, communicate effectively, engage teams, and hold people accountable.
- Valid driver’s license and access to an automobile.
Preferred Qualifications
- 3-5 years of supervisory experience (manager roles).
- Master’s degree in engineering (or advanced technical degree) or Business Administration.
- Professional Engineer License.
- Experience or knowledge in utility design, planning, or construction.
