About the role

The Principal Project Engineer supports the development of complex integrated solution proposals as a Subject Matter Expert through award, execution, and after installation management. This role defines workflows, jobs, and reporting relationships to optimize effectiveness, evaluates and recommends changes in methods or procedures, identifies resource needs, and troubleshoots complex problems. Decisions may have a moderate to high impact on business operations, and the role may be responsible for the overall success of a function or project.

Responsibilities

  • Apply substantial and extensive experience in planning, managing, and executing complex material handling systems (e.g., AGVs, conveyors, ASRS, robotics).
  • Understand dynamic handling characteristics, constraints, and risks associated with materials handled within complex systems.
  • Define and demonstrate equipment, subsystem, and system performance criteria.
  • Understand controls architectures, including WMS and WCS integration, and their impact on project execution.
  • Interface with General Contractors, Construction Managers, or owners regarding project execution responsibilities.
  • Identify and develop team skills required for successful implementation of mechanical, controls, software, and installation subsystems.
  • Develop detailed project schedules using MS Project, including in-scope and out-of-scope milestones.
  • Create, define, and execute acceptance test plans for physical, functional, rate, and availability testing.
  • Manage 3rd party procurement, including RFPs/RFQs, bid review, assessment, and contract award.
  • Execute change control processes, approvals, and information exchange involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Coordinate activities of internal and contractor resources, proactively addressing issues impacting execution.
  • Mitigate scope, schedule, and cost concerns internally and with customers.
  • Coordinate on-site activities with multiple (sub)contractors, managing shared space and time windows.
  • Interface with local code requirements, including seismic, fire, and ADA compliance.
  • Perform rack design and layout (e.g., selective, deep reach, push back, cantilever, pallet flow, carton flow, shelving).
  • Design and layout related products, including mezzanines, wire guidance, ASRS, AGVs, robots, and conveyors.
  • Support sales, engineering, and contract preparation/administration.
  • Perform facility take-offs and scaling as requested by management.
  • Work independently and collaboratively with sales representatives, suppliers, installers, and clients.
  • Read, analyze, and interpret business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the public.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a four-year college or technical school.
  • Engineering background with over 5 years of experience in application, design, and installation of integrated material handling equipment (MHE) systems.
  • Structural systems experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and Project.
  • Valid, unrestricted driver’s license.
  • Ability to travel up to 40% (16 hours per week).
  • Must be insurable by Raymond West.

Physical Requirements

  • Sedentary, desk-bound position with prolonged periods of sitting and computer work.
  • Requires close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
  • Occasional lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds.
  • Occasional walking on construction and warehouse sites with uneven ground and obstacles.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $81,000 - $105,000. The specific pay offered may be influenced by factors such as relevant experience, education, and work location.
