Job Summary

Kleinfelder's Concord office is seeking Principal Professionals on a flexible basis. These roles will direct technical programs and projects of varying size, manage assigned staff, and work independently to solve complex problems.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures consistently accurate and timely client and management communications.
  • Solves abstract problems/difficult technical matters (independently and/or as the leader of a technical team) and serves as a technical resource regionally or to a specific market.
  • Develops and maintains client relationships as assigned.
  • As a lead technical specialist in discipline, performs analytical, field and project management work.
  • Manages major proposal coordination, preparation and technical assessment.
  • Provides expert witness testimony and high-level consultation on projects.

Position Competency Requirements

  • Applied Critical Thinking: Distills the important/critical facets of technical challenges and prioritizes effort to solve problems commensurate with the job level. Recognized regionally or within a specific market for analyzing and solving complex, multi-faceted technical problems within their practice area.
  • Routinely Engages and Directs Others: Engages and directs other specialized technical staff to work on appropriate facets, stewards the process, sets priorities and levels of effort, and distills the combined effort to a cohesive conclusion. Oversees, trains, and mentors staff within the Practice on problem solving.
  • Technical Peer Review: Performs and executes Project Peer Review in compliance with Kleinfelder's KQP 4.5. Confirms the work complies with project requirements and the professional standard of care.
  • Technical Calculations: Performs and executes technical calculations in compliance with Kleinfelder's KQP 6.1. Reviews calculations performed by others and demonstrates complete understanding of KQP 6.1. Leads and teaches compliance with KQP 6.1. Understands policies for calculation review. Mentors others in the policies for preparation of calculations.
  • Technical Communication: Effectively and convincingly communicates technical information in meetings/presentations to practitioners, clients and laypersons. Demonstrates and leads effective and convincing communication of technical information as an expert within a region or market. Proficient at communicating with clients or public and frequently presents at external conferences and/or technical seminars. Leads short list interviews and presentations. Recognized as a regional or companywide expert in at least one area of the practice.
  • Technical Problem Solving: Applies creativity and appropriate independent thought to solve technical problems commensurate with the job level. Is an internal regional or market specific resource for solving complex technical problems in the discipline. Leads teams of internal or external technical resources to bring the most appropriate technical expertise for the solution. Mentors junior staff on problem solving approaches, developing the big picture understanding.
  • Health & Safety: Demonstrates understanding and commitment to risk assessment and the Health and Safety planning hierarchy by conducting risk reviews for high-hazard work at the proposal stage, and budgeting for Health and Safety for each project in their portfolios. Demonstrates leadership in conducting Management Site Visits and LPOs, providing recognition, coaching and mentoring junior staff for effective project safety management, etc. Demonstrates commitment to vetting and managing subcontractors for safety success.

Experience & Academic Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of experience and education required, Master's preferred.
  • Experience: 12+ years of related experience in consulting engineering firm or related service business and knowledge of applicable laws and regulations required; or 8 years related experience with a Master's; or 6 years related experience with a PhD.
  • Certification/Registration: Technical registration if applicable.

Other Knowledge and Skills

  • Superior communication skills and in-depth knowledge of company products and operations.
  • High level of technical expertise and knowledge of current scientific information in specialty area.
  • Reputation as subject matter expert based on publications and presentations desired.

Hourly Range

The expected hourly range for the position is displayed in accordance with the California Pay Transparency Law. Final agreed upon compensation is based upon individual qualifications and experience. Hourly Range: $49.16 - $67.87.
