Principal Planner

About the role

The position is classified as a Safety-Sensitive role. Applicants must pass a drug and alcohol test.

Responsibilities

• Communicate with others in English to ensure business safety and efficiency.
• Create meeting agendas, staff comments, illustrations, and legal notices for the Board of Zoning Appeals.
• Review preliminary and final plats, site plans, and architectural elevations for compliance with City regulations.
• Present to the Planning Commission in a televised setting and advise on annexation, zoning changes, and land use.
• Present to the Board of Zoning Appeals and provide professional guidance.
• Present to City Council during public hearings and address questions.
• Advise the public on zoning district boundaries, development requirements, flood insurance program, and appeal procedures.
• Evaluate compliance with zoning and other city ordinances through visual inspections and investigations.
• Research demographic and economic data and write reports for various city bodies.
• Address public bodies regarding development plans, zoning applications, ordinance amendments, and annexation requests.
• Review building permit applications for zoning compliance.
• Investigate possible violations of the City's Zoning Ordinance and enforce the ordinance as necessary.

Requirements

• Minimum Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration, or related field.
• Experience: Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience as an Urban Planner.
• Licenses: Valid driver's license.
• Certification: AICP certification preferred but not required.
