Principal Network Developer
This role sits within the Network Region Build (NRB) team, which designs, deploys and operates OCI’s global cloud network—spanning data-center fabrics, edge networks, backbone and metro fiber, multi-cloud connectivity, and large-scale server rack builds and decommissions. NRB provides 24×7 operational coverage during build phases and drives automation, process improvements and tooling in partnership with Network Automation.
About the role
You will lead moderately complex network lifecycle programs—defining objectives, delivery procedures and technical milestones, and may act as project technical lead across two to three engineers. You will decompose high-level architectures into detailed designs, own requirements and documentation, and serve as the principal escalation point (Tier 2) for large-scale network events. The role also involves hands-on scripting and automation, vendor collaboration, and mentoring junior staff.
Responsibilities
- Lead network lifecycle management programs: set high-level objectives, organize milestones and tasks, and coordinate with project/program managers and leadership.
- Serve as technical SME for moderately complex projects, including requirements, specifications and documentation; decompose architectures into detailed designs.
- Coordinate efforts of two to three engineers; may lead multiple engineers on solutions with complex module interactions.
- Work with service teams to ensure solutions are supported by monitoring and automation systems; serve as Tier 2 escalation and break-fix lead for large-scale events.
- Drive systematic root-cause analysis and develop scripts to automate non-traditional, complex tasks; may lead network automation design and delivery projects.
- Provide broad technical guidance to staff, interpret leadership input, and conduct coaching sessions for junior members.
- Collaborate with vendor engineering and account managers to address operational issues, participate in RFQ/RFP development, and lead adoption of new hardware.
- Communicate actively with product teams to align technology with product and service requirements; help assess gaps, solutions and needs.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (preferred) and at least eight years of related experience.
- Demonstrated experience in a large ISP or cloud-provider environment.
- Strong Python skills for automation and datacenter design; familiarity with a second scripting or compiled language.
- Deep exposure to commodity Ethernet hardware (Broadcom/Mellanox) and protocol expertise with BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, TCP/IP, IPv4, IPv6, DNS, DHCP, MPLS, VPN and SSL.
- Experience with Internet peering, inter-domain networking, and high-level software design/development.
- Familiarity with automation frameworks and deployment; network modeling and programming (YANG, OpenConfig, NETCONF).
- Knowledge of network security design, system performance characterization/testing, and data-flow/telemetry design and operation.
- Ability to influence product roadmaps, resolve complex issues creatively, and work with limited supervision.
- Excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills; proven leadership and mentoring ability.
