Principal NDE - Network & SDN - TeraWave
About the Role
Blue Origin is pioneering the future of space-based communications with TeraWave, a revolutionary satellite communications network designed to deliver symmetrical data speeds of up to 6 Tbps anywhere on Earth. This multi-orbit constellation will consist of optically interconnected satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) and medium Earth orbit (MEO), providing enterprise-grade connectivity for critical operations worldwide. As a Principal Network Development Engineer for Network Architecture and SDN at TeraWave, you join the team responsible for the design and implementation of the "brain" of our constellation. We develop a dynamic, self-healing network that operates at orbital speeds across our multi-orbit constellation of 5,408 optically interconnected satellites. In this Principal role, you apply deep networking architecture expertise to develop critical components of our Ground and Terrestrial networking infrastructure. You collaborate with principal engineers and technical leaders to implement innovative approaches to routing, traffic management, and network resilience. This is a greenfield environment where you develop resilient, highly available, and secure ground networking connectivity that backhauls customer traffic.
Responsibilities
- Architect, develop, provision, and operate the terrestrial network across hundreds of global satellite gateway sites.
- Define and evolve network architecture, engineering standards, and operational best practices for the global ground network.
- Partner with network, cloud, and field engineering teams to deliver a scalable and resilient ground network.
- Design automation frameworks and deployment pipelines that enable rapid, repeatable provisioning of complete gateway sites.
- Integrate the satellite constellation with the terrestrial backbone across management, customer, and security networking services.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineers across multiple organizations on large-scale networking initiatives.
- Drive architectural decisions and engineering excellence for successful delivery of complex ground network programs.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, related field, or equivalent experience.
- 10 or more years of networking experience in large scale, complex production environments including WANs.
- 7 or more years of technical leadership, architecture, design ownership, or mentorship in WAN environments.
- Knowledge of BGP, IS-IS, OSPF, and Segment Routing (SRv6 or SR-MPLS) in network environments.
- Experience with cloud networking, network virtualization, segmentation, and automation of large scale WAN architectures.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Experience designing highly available, fault tolerant, and robust WAN and ground network architectures.
- Demonstrated ability to translate business needs into scalable, secure, reliable, and supportable network architecture decisions.
- Ability to influence technical direction across multiple teams without relying on direct reporting authority.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, strategic thinking, communication, and technical leadership skills.
- Passion for Blue Origin's mission and ability to work in a fast paced, dynamic environment.
