About The Role
The Principal Mine Geology will lead best practice in open cut mine geology. This role will focus on geoscience activities required to commence, execute, and cease open cut mine geology activities. The role will support the Manager Resource Knowledge in ensuring risk-based geoscience models of the subsurface material are informed to guide the entire life cycle of resources, from resource definition through to mine closure. Key accountabilities include:
- Thought leadership in multidisciplinary aspects of open cut mine geology activities.
- Supporting appropriate governance requirements for mine geology to inform decisions throughout the entire resource value chain (resource estimation, extraction, processing, and closure).
- Supporting the awareness and capability of BHP geoscientists in applying integrated geosciences to resource exploration, extraction, and closure.
- Supporting internal technical review processes and merger and acquisition projects.
- Building trusted relationships with and between BHP Operations and Planning and Technical groups.
- Identifying key knowledge gaps in creating and delivering mine geology knowledge requirements and maintaining research roadmaps to influence resource allocation for research and development initiatives.
- Influencing, leading, and managing mine geology research to address identified knowledge deficiencies collaboratively with asset or functional peers within BHP.
- Promoting BHP as leaders in mine geology to the external technical community, including universities, research institutions, and professional organizations.
About You
Demonstrated 15 years of geoscience experience throughout the resource value chain, from resource delineation through to closure, in an industry capacity. A record of successfully mentoring and coaching geoscientists. Led teams achieving innovative breakthroughs in understanding or application of risk-based resources to inform business decisions. Deep technical expertise in geoscience, particularly open cut mine geology and its application to business decisions. Evidence of technical thought leadership in influencing research directions. Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and adapt to new concepts through breadth of applied science-based work experience.
Required Skills, Accreditations and Qualifications
- Tertiary qualification in Geoscience
- Recommended Postgraduate degree (MSc/PhD) in geoscience or resource engineering
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
