Principal Marine Structural Engineer
About the role
Geosyntec has an exciting opportunity for a Principal Marine Structural Engineer to join our Waterfront Improvement practice. The role is based in our Seattle, WA; Sacramento, CA; Santa Barbara, CA; Los Angeles, CA; San Diego, CA offices or any of our other U.S. based offices. The opportunity to work a hybrid schedule or remotely from your home office may be available.
Responsibilities
- Provide subject matter expertise (SME) for structural design and engineering of marine infrastructure projects such as bulkheads, wharfs, bridge pilings, harbors, docks, breakwaters, and shoreline protection systems.
- Conduct structural analysis, modeling, and design of marine and waterfront structures to ensure stability, safety, and compliance with regulatory standards.
- Support project teams with technical input during all project phases, including planning, design, construction, and maintenance.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative and sustainable solutions tailored to client needs.
- Aid in preparing technical proposals, cost estimates, and project schedules to support business development efforts.
- Lead and review structural calculations, technical drawings, and specifications to maintain quality standards.
- Mentor and train junior engineers, fostering technical growth and professional development.
- Stay updated on advancements in marine engineering practices, tools, and technologies, integrating best practices into project work.
- Engage with clients and stakeholders to present design concepts, technical reports, and project updates.
- Drive personal, company, and rental vehicles to client or company project or office sites, and other business locations, as needed.
- Regular field work and overnight travel: 30 - 50%.
Qualifications
- At least 10 years (15+ years preferred) of direct engineering experience in marine structural engineering, with emphasis in projects such as bulkheads, docks, harbors, and shoreline protection systems or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proficiency in structural analysis and design software, such as SAP2000, STAAD.Pro, or LARSA.
- Strong understanding of materials used in marine environments, including steel, concrete, timber, and composites.
- Experience in wave, current, and load modeling as applied to marine structures.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- Business development acumen, with experience supporting proposal writing, client presentations, and project bids.
- Current OSHA 40-hr HAZWOPER training and refreshers.
- Health & Safety training, medical monitoring, and client-driven drug and background testing may be required.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record for business travel.
