Principal Maintenance Worker - Athletic Fields Crew

Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation seeks motivated individuals to join our year-round parks maintenance team. Early hours and a strong benefits package are offered.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and upkeep athletic fields and adjunct facilities.
  • Perform skilled and advanced maintenance duties in sports turf management, including mowing, aerating, seeding, fertilizing, line painting, and ball field maintenance (infield repairs, dragging, and lining).
  • Conduct minor construction tasks and operate various types of equipment and power tools.
  • Apply chemical sprays and assist in irrigation maintenance and repair.
  • Wash and clean tools and equipment.
  • Prepare for and perform emergency clean-up before and after severe storms.
  • Work some weekends or evenings as required.
  • Lift 50 pounds or more.
  • Perform other related tasks as required.

Must maintain personal mobile technology as a condition of employment. This position is part of an approved Career Development Plan (CDP) offering career progression opportunities and salary incentives based on performance, qualifications, and experience, as funding permits.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED and two years of experience in grounds maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Good oral/written communication, interpersonal, and public relations skills.
  • Must possess or obtain a Registered Technician Pesticide License within nine months of employment.
  • Ability to work courteously, efficiently, and tactfully with customers.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, officials, and the public.
  • Ability to read chemical labels and material safety data sheets (SDS).
  • Ability to perform semi-skilled landscaping, carpentry, masonry, painting, and plumbing tasks.
  • Current valid driver’s license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out-of-state driving records must be obtained by the applicant and presented at the time of interview, reflecting at least three years of history and dated within thirty days of the interview date.
  • Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check, and education/degree verification required.
  • This position is considered Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Schedule

  • Monday - Friday; 6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
  • Includes some evenings, weekends, and holidays.
