Placeworks is seeking a Principal-level Urban Planner/Designer for a full-time, onsite position in the private sector.
About the role
As a Principal-level Urban Planner/Designer, you will lead complex planning and urban design projects, mentor junior staff, and drive innovative solutions for sustainable and equitable communities.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage urban planning and design projects from concept through implementation.
- Develop visionary, actionable plans that integrate land use, transportation, housing, and environmental sustainability.
- Collaborate with clients, stakeholders, and interdisciplinary teams to align project goals with community needs.
- Provide technical expertise in zoning, policy analysis, and regulatory compliance.
- Mentor and guide junior planners and designers to foster professional growth.
- Prepare and present compelling reports, graphics, and presentations for diverse audiences.
- Stay current with industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies in urban planning and design.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Urban Planning, Urban Design, or a related field.
- Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in urban planning or design, with a proven track record of leading successful projects.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in urban design, land use planning, and community engagement.
- Proficiency in industry-standard software (e.g., AutoCAD, GIS, Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp, Rhino).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex ideas clearly.
- Experience working with public agencies, private developers, and community groups.
- Professional licensure or certification (e.g., AICP) is highly desirable.
