Principal Health Data Scientist
About the Role
As the Principal Health Data Scientist, you will lead and serve as the subject matter expert in data science, programming, and analytical modeling in support of health economics and real-world evidence (HEOR/RWE) research within Inovalon’s Insights team. This independent contributor role requires deep domain expertise and the ability to manage projects with minimal supervision in a fast-paced research environment. You will execute research studies from start to finish, including reviewing protocols for methodological appropriateness, building and validating cohorts, performing analysis, and generating insights from administrative claims and EHR data.
Responsibilities
- Serve as lead for programming, analytics, and statistics when collaborating with teams of health services researchers and business analysts to derive insights from large administrative claims datasets, electronic medical records, and healthcare registry datasets.
- Identify and develop solutions to key strategic business problems using high-level modeling and statistical analysis techniques.
- Utilize SQL for advanced data extraction, transformation, and management; document and manage a library of source code and algorithms for future use.
- Identify, develop, and test hypotheses to support research and product offerings, communicating findings clearly and actionably to clients.
- Respond to and lead highly complex operational data requests, creating ad-hoc queries to support research projects.
- Provide quality control, quality assurance, and review for projects where you are not the lead, including solution-oriented approaches and mentoring for cross-functional teams.
- Collaborate with Inovalon’s Enterprise Data Management, Data Integration, MORE2 Registry®, and iPORT+™ teams to identify, understand, and resolve data issues, improving efficiency and scalability of data processes.
- Troubleshoot complex production-related issues and coordinate successful resolution.
- Assist with the evaluation of data analytic vendors and tools.
- Maintain compliance with Inovalon’s policies, procedures, and mission statement, adhering to all confidentiality and HIPAA requirements.
Requirements
- 7+ years of professional experience in healthcare or pharmaceutical industries working with administrative claims data and big data.
- Excellent SQL programming skills, including experience with the Snowflake cloud data platform.
- Working knowledge and experience using statistical analysis tools such as SAS, R, and/or MatLab.
- Demonstrated high-level problem-solving, analytical reasoning, and decision-making skills.
- Strong understanding and experience in researching and resolving data issues with a logical, problem-solving mentality when working with large, complex, and incomplete data sources.
- Business analytical skills (process flows, procedures, spreadsheets, modeling) and a good understanding of design and architecture principles.
- Excellent project management skills, with the ability to work independently on multiple projects with competing priorities and a strong commitment to meeting goals and deadlines.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret results based on advanced statistical techniques.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both IT and business environments; ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to work under minimal supervision in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.
- Advanced knowledge of healthcare, health policy, pharmaceutical, medical device, and related issues.
- Superior customer service, including first-rate work product and project management, with a strong ability to manage challenging client situations and troubleshoot issues.
- Strong ability to translate complex information for a wide range of clients.
Qualifications
Master’s degree in statistics, applied mathematics, computer science, machine learning, econometrics, engineering, or a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Pay
Base compensation range: $150,000—$190,000 USD. This position may also be eligible for performance-based incentives. The actual base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, business needs, geographical location, and internal equity.

Schedule
Sedentary work (sitting for long periods of time) with occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or repetitive motions. Subject to inside environmental conditions. Travel for this position is less than 5%, typically for local training purposes.
